College Prowler Take
Overall, students feel safe on campus. Security officers and safety escorts are extremely visible at night and help students stay safe. However, the sense of security lessens as students venture off campus and into the areas of downtown Riverside. Students suggest traveling in groups, especially at night, both on and off campus. Be aware—as safe as the campus feels, it seems like there are slightly more armed robberies and crimes that occur as time goes on. Although parking lots are well lit, they seem to be places of an increasing number of crimes at night. Follow the common sense rule of safety in numbers, and you should be fine. Also, check online or pick up a brochure that describes the safest walkways to use at night, as there are certain designated areas that are encouraged and discouraged. For example, avoid the particular path that students refer to as the “rape trail,” although UCR recently had lights added to make sure the this trail was well lit.
The Campus Safety escort service, in conjunction with the Women’s Resource Center, periodically leads “safety walks” that point out good places to walk and areas that need more light for safety. The escort service begins at dusk and runs until midnight, Sunday through Thursday. Red phones are available in various places on campus where students can contact the service, ask for an escort, and someone will be there in five minutes or less. Also, blue emergency telephone lines are available throughout campus that connect directly to UCPD. When the escort service is not operating, students can call the UCR Police department directly to get someone to walk with them to their on-campus destination.

Campus security is good, but downtown Riverside is a very bad neighborhood. It’s very dangerous; almost like LA. The area immediately around the school is okay, but if you go about five miles in any direction, it’s really bad (as in lots of poverty and crime). Most people only go here for the school. Everyone says they’ll be moving as soon as they’re finished. |

There are blue emergency phones located throughout campus and the dorms. The campus’s alleys and other normally dark areas are well lit, so I feel security on campus is tight. |

UC police are great and always on top of things. I attend both night and day classes and feel safe all the time. |

The police station is right in the front of the school, and there are escort services so you never have to walk alone at night. It’s a nice campus, and I’ve never been afraid while being there at night. |

Did You Know?
The “Campus Security and Crime Report” contains a summary of crimes reported on campus and in other designated areas during the past three calendar years. It also contains references to UC and local policies concerning criminal activity and security on campus. Printed copies are available upon request from the UCR police department.
The Campus Safety Escort Service is the only program like it across all of the UC campuses, as it is made up mostly of volunteers. It is a service run by students, for students.
UCR has one of the fastest running Campus Safety Escort Services across the UC system, as students generally wait for five minutes or less after calling in for an escort.
The Women’s Resource Center sponsors periodic “safety walks” around campus, and this often leads to additional improvements such as lighting in dark places on campus.
