Traditions

  • Bagpipes - Since UCR is home of the Highlanders, it is not uncommon to hear the odd noise of the pipes making their way through the entire campus at least a few times a week. The bagpipe players tend to practice in the late afternoons and evenings, so if you are unaware of this fact, you might easily be startled and puzzled by the strange music.
  • Physics 2000 Streakers - It seems to be a tradition for one of the fraternities to run through Physics 2000 in the buff at the start of a lecture.
  • Writer’s Week - Along with the long-held fact that UCR is the only UC to offer a degree in creative writing, the University has an annual writer’s week every year. During this week, a variety of writers, poets, and authors are invited to share their thoughts and readings with students and the Riverside community.

School Spirit

Over the years, UCR school spirit has become increasingly stronger. Walking around campus, there are a number of people wearing UCR attire, which shows they are proud of their school. Although UCR does not have a football team, a number of students stand strong behind the basketball team and attend the games. Within the last year, a student club specifically aimed at promoting school spirit came into existence. The “Fanatic Braveheart Intimidators,” also known as the “FBI,” attend sports events as a group and have become unofficial cheerleaders for UCR, especially at basketball games.
