College Prowler Take
Athletics have become a joke at UCSD. Although the University moved from Division III to Division II in 2000, sports have very little support around campus. There is no football team, and although some of the teams have done very well in competition and have gone on to the national level, no one pays attention. Unfortunately, the athletic teams receive very little funding, and there are no scholarships given out for athletics. Those who play on a team seem to enjoy it, but everyone else is oblivious to the sports on campus. Intramural (IM) sports are a consistent favorite around campus. There is a large variety of sports played, and surprisingly, one of the most popular is coed innertube water polo. Intramural teams can be made up of friends, members of the same college, or complete strangers. Playing IMs is a great way to meet new people, spend time with friends, or relieve some stress. If you want to participate but want something less competitive or time-consuming, there are numerous sports and fitness classes offered at RIMAC and the Old Gym. Students enjoy cheap or free classes in anything from ballroom dancing to karate to weightlifting. Organized sports at UCSD are not popular, but physical fitness and keeping in shape is important to most students.

Varsity sports aren’t that big at all. All the games are advertised, but the students here are pretty apathetic for it. Plus, we don’t have a football team. I feel, though, that lots of our teams are pretty good and do get a good turnout. IM sports are pretty big and easy to get involved with. They have them for practically every season. |

Sports are pretty decent here. Personally, I run on the track team. People are encouraged to go to games and show school pride through Triton Tide (our spirit group). IM and club sports are huge. Most of the campus participates in them. |

Sports are not that big here....
Sports are not that big here. There are lots of intramurals. It’s probably because the fields are along the outskirts of the campus, so we don’t get to see the athletes. |

IM sports are pretty big but varsity is not. Sports are not all that big here, although we do have teams. |

The school is D-II, so most sports aren’t a huge deal. IMs are really big, though; many students participate in something and we have a huge assortment of IMs. The best is inner tube water polo. |
