Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics have become a joke at UCSD. Although the University moved from Division III to Division II in 2000, sports have very little support around campus. There is no football team, and although some of the teams have done very well in competition and have gone on to the national level, no one pays attention. Unfortunately, the athletic teams receive very little funding, and there are no scholarships given out for athletics. Those who play on a team seem to enjoy it, but everyone else is oblivious to the sports on campus.

Intramural (IM) sports are a consistent favorite around campus. There is a large variety of sports played, and surprisingly, one of the most popular is coed innertube water polo. Intramural teams can be made up of friends, members of the same college, or complete strangers. Playing IMs is a great way to meet new people, spend time with friends, or relieve some stress. If you want to participate but want something less competitive or time-consuming, there are numerous sports and fitness classes offered at RIMAC and the Old Gym. Students enjoy cheap or free classes in anything from ballroom dancing to karate to weightlifting. Organized sports at UCSD are not popular, but physical fitness and keeping in shape is important to most students.

There Is No Football Team

Due to the fact that there is no football team for UCSD, not much school spirit is shown through sports, unless it is basketball season. Even with basketball season, however, the men's team does not live up to the spirit demonstrated at the school. The women's basketball team, though, is a big pride of the university, because they are good. Simple as that.

Facilities Are Superb but Athletic Recognition Isn't

We are D2 and despite honest and great efforts from AS body, most students are not school spirited.

School Spirit

Normally, UCSD is not very spirited. However, at certain events throughout the year school spirit becomes more prevalent. Freshmen or other people living on campus have more of a spirited attitude about UCSD, which usually begins to wane after they move off campus. The Unolympic games are held during Welcome Week of every year and are dominated by freshmen, but anyone can participate. At the Unolympic games each college competes against the others in games such as tug of war and wrestling. The best college wins the Golden Shoe, an old gym shoe spray painted gold, which they proudly display in their buildings. Occasionally, the Golden Shoe is stolen during the year by a losing college. Every year, there is a Spirit Week on campus. Each college picks a theme and decorates its part of the campus. There are events during the day on Library Walk, and the week concludes with a basketball game. The event with the most school spirit is the Sun God Festival. This is popular for all students, not just those living on campus. Campus is always filled on the Sun God Festival with students having a good time and participating in events all over campus. The day concludes with a concert at RIMAC field.

Getting Tickets

Box Offices are located at Price Center or RIMAC for students to purchace tickets. Most of the games at UCSD are free or only a couple of dollars to attend. Check out athletics.ucsd.edu, call (858) 534-4211, or e-mail cquthrie@ucsd.edu for prices and times.
