  • Camp Snoopy: The former name of Sixth College. Some students still call it by this name.
  • Comic–Con: A large comic book and popular arts convention held annually nearby.
  • The Hump: The grass hump by the Old Student Center—students love to hang out and study here.
  • June Gloom: When, in the month of June, the skies become hazy and dark for what seems like ages.
  • Sun God: The unofficial UCSD mascot.
  • The Triton: The official UCSD mascot. Triton is, ironically—and somewhat contradictory—the son of Poseidon, the God of the Sea.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Be adaptable with roommates.
  • Bring flip-flops to wear in the dorm showers.
  • Buy lots of underwear and socks so you won’t have to do laundry very often.
  • Take advantage of the beach.

  • Be flexible.
  • Be ready to meet new and different people.
  • Bring earplugs.
  • Learn how to use the public buses.
  • Try to remember you are at school not just to have fun, but to study, too (at least occasionally).

Sun God

UCSD is known for many things, but the annual Sun God festival is what brings the university to attention because theres nothing else like it (at least for the UC system) We also have a vast array of art pieces from the Stewart Art Collection including Sun God, giraffe catchers, stonehenge, warren bear, geisel library, and several others.

Scripps!

UCSD consists of six colleges and the Scripps Institute of Oceanography. After completing one quarter of my freshman year, I feel that Scripps would be very beneficial to my major.The best thing about UC San Diego, is that it is right next to the beach. Through Scripps, we get the Birch Aquarium, which is voted as the best museum in San Diego.

  • : Going to the watermelon drop at Urey Hall.
  • : Decorating the Sun God statue.
  • : Going to class drunk during Sun God, Winterfest, and Fallfest.
  • : Attending the Unolympics during Welcome Week.

  • : Celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday with free cake.
Urban Legends
  • There are tunnels under campus that go from one building to another in case of emergencies. When much of UCSD was designed and built in the 1960s, other campuses, such as Berkeley, were experiencing lots of riots and demonstrations. The community of La Jolla is very conservative and did not want to have a bunch of protesting students living close by, so they presumably convinced the designers of UCSD to build tunnels connecting the different parts of the school. The tunnels were to be used by the National Guard; in case any of the students tried to protest they could easily and quickly be subdued. Some of the escaped mental patients supposedly hide in the tunnels to avoid having to go back to the mental institution.
  • There is a Veterans Hospital across the street from campus and the Camp Snoopy dorms. Sometimes the mental institution patients from the VA hospital escape and try to hide in people’s dorm rooms. Right next to the dorms is a canyon with lots of trees, thick underbrush, and a little stream. At night, if it gets very quiet, you can hear the escaped patients singing and laughing to themselves.
