Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The public transportation around UCSD and La Jolla is convenient for students. It is easy to catch a city bus or UCSD shuttle to campus, the grocery store, or the beach. Students also get a free bus sticker, which will take them around La Jolla and other areas of San Diego for free. There are also free shuttles to the airport and the train station before holidays. The UCSD City Shuttle runs in a loop around La Jolla, picking students up from their apartments and taking them to school. The San Diego city buses and the UCSD shuttles often get crowded in the morning and afternoon when students are trying to get to school or home, but they are usually quick and on time.

Public transportation around the rest of San Diego is neither convenient nor quick. The buses do not come regularly, and you usually have to transfer at least once to get to your destination. The airport and the train station are about 10 miles away from UCSD, and taking public transportation to them can be time consuming. Overall, students agree having a car is not necessary, especially if you plan on staying in La Jolla, but traveling around the rest of San Diego is difficult without your own car or a roommate willing to drive you around.

The transportation si decent, as the buses can take you around the city and get you back on time. You can go shopping or go to clubs there.

Shuttles Are the Easiest Option

Even though you buy a parking permit, there is never a guarantee that you will actually find parking. Parking is a joke at UCSD because they have graduate and staff parking lots close to the school and student parking takes up a small fraction of a lot on-campus. Student parking lots are kept further away and they are inconvenient to walk to. Fortunately, shuttles run from those parking lots and even to where students park off campus. There is no cost for these convenient shuttles, they run early in the morning and late in the night.
