Parking is a nightmare around the UCSF campus. The cost of parking permits or garage parking is outrageous. People do drive and find parking in the surrounding neighborhoods but it is not guaranteed and there will likely be limits to the amount of time you can spend in one spot (e.g. 2-4 hours). The vast majority of students and employees take public transportation to campus and the hospital because of the parking situation.

UCSF is located in the Inner Sunset neighborhood of San Francisco. Being in any part of San Francisco means that you will have access to an endless variety of cultures, events, attractions, and foodie adventures. Just go walking through the neighborhood or take a MUNI bus to different parts of the city for some great experiences.

UCSF is a unique school in that it is only a graduate and professional school. Different schools include the school of nursing, school of medicine, school of dentistry, school of pharmacy, and the graduate division which includes Master's and doctorate degrees in a variety of Health and Biological Sciences.

Fortunately I did not have too much difficulty applying for and receiving financial aid through the school; however, I can't say the same for many of my classmates. The program I was in started in the Summer quarter and because of this the school seemed to have difficulty getting the financial aid packages out in time. Some students did not receive theirs before the Summer quarter tuition deadline and others received it only days before. Particularly if you are going into the MEPN program I would suggest going to the financial aid office in person ahead of time to ensure that your money comes through when it needs to.

The program that I applied to at UCSF was the Master's Entry Program in Nursing. The application process for this program included writing 2 essays - one goal statement and one personal history statement - and obtaining 4 letters of recommendation. The application itself was not difficult but what was challenging was applying for multiple nursing schools at the same time. Unlike applying for medical school, nursing school applications are not uniform and actually differ greatly, requiring different essays and pre-requisite classes for each one. UCSF had a different deadline and the number of letters of recommendation seemed like a lot to me at the time.
As far as important criteria for admission, I would say that they are looking for candidates that have a something unique to bring to the field of nursing, rich perspectives or past experiences that they can carry into their new career, and those who have a passion for working with underserved populations.

The school is near the beach so the weather can range from extremely foggy in the middle of summer to heat waves in the middle of winter. I tend to like it that way though.

Getting my Master's in Nursing, I feel the program is well-designed. Professors are excellent. The program is rigorous and student body is impressive. However, sometimes the administrative details are lacking which take time and energy to clarify. For example, we were informed of classes that were required last minute. It makes planning to work part-time hard.
