College Prowler Take
No matter which dorm you live in, it’s hard not to have fun when you are suddenly living with 50 other 18-year-old freshmen who just moved out of their parents’ house. The only dorm to steer clear of as a freshman is San Rafael—it has more upperclassmen. Usually, these students have already made all of their friends and are no longer going through the same transitions as freshmen. UCSB dorms are either on campus or in Isla Vista. You can put yourself in a lottery for the on-campus dorms, but there’s no guarantee that you will be placed there. The on-campus dorms are more crowded, but they’re closer to classes and University activities, and some have ocean views. Manzanita Village is the newest and, therefore, the nicest on-campus dorm. The off-campus dorms have larger rooms and more of an apartment-like feel, and many students like the spacious rooms at Santa Catalina, despite its distance from campus. Each of the dorms have their positives and negatives, and most students are happy with the trade-offs and comfortable with whichever dorm they end up in.

Santa Catalina has the best deal. Don’t be swayed by its distance from campus—you’ll get a good workout from the bike ride. Because everyone lives somewhat farther away than the other freshmen, everyone living in Santa Catalina has the opportunity to bond. The rooms are spacious, and each one has a sink in it. Plus, only four people to a suite have to share one bathroom. |

On-campus dorms are good because you can wake up two minutes before class, whereas if you live in Santa Catalina, you have to make a 10-minute bike ride to class. But I still loved living in Santa Catalina because the rooms are bigger, I only shared a bathroom with three other people, and there are so many freshmen living there it didn’t feel like I was missing out on anything. Santa Catalina is a freshman experience all on its own. |

Tropicana and Fontainebleu are cool because they have apartment-like setups that are incredibly fun. On-campus places are very crowded but close to school. |

Dorms are great. There are off-campus dorms in Isla Vista, as well as the on-campus dorms; both are great. It doesn’t really matter which, but I think it would be better to be on campus. |

On-campus dorms are okay. The...
On-campus dorms are okay. The rooms are kind of small. Most rooms are doubles, but due to overpopulation, some are triples. On campus, you might have to only share a room with one other person, but you will have a common bathroom with toilets and showers that you share with about 50 people. Off campus, you have Tropicana Gardens, Fontainebleu, and Santa Catalina. Tropicana and Fontainebleu are about the same, but Tropicana is bigger. Fontainebleu is adjacent to campus, and Tropicana is two blocks further. They both have suite-style arrangements—a couple bedrooms to one bathroom—like an apartment. Santa Catalina is the nicest and most expensive. It is also the furthest from campus—about 15 minutes on a bike. |
