Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Demographically, the UCSB student population is predominantly Caucasian and middle- to upper-class. Diversity on campus, as far as clubs and organizations, is definitely present, although not highly publicized. In other words, the ethnic organizations are important to those who are in them, but invisible to practically everyone else. The University does offer many clubs and services that students can take advantage of, and cultural events are becoming much more popular.

Most students feel comfortable and safe in this community. In fact, although UCSB has the least amount of diversity compared to the other UC campuses, students agree that it probably has the most racial integration, and friends’ groups are likely to be racially diverse. Over half of the student body is white, and about a third is split equally between Asian and Hispanic students. The African American student body is small, comprising only three percent of the total population. Students agree that, while not very diverse, the campus does make students of every ethnicity feel welcome, and that tolerance for the gay and lesbian scene is high.

Diversity

As an African American student, I notice that there are very few African Americans (maybe 3%). Yet the Black community on campus is very strong and united.

Facts

Gay Pride

About 10-15 percent of students identify themselves as gay, lesbian, or bisexual. Although the scene is not big on campus, tolerance is.

Political Activity

Overall, students tend to be liberal—this is a California college campus, after all. The student Republican, Democrat, Liberal, and Green groups are vocal and very active on campus. In the past, peace marches and walkouts have taken place. Local politics are also hot topics for UCSB students.

Economic Status

The student population generally consists of Caucasian students who fall between upper-middle class to the elite. However, UCSB students do not flaunt their economic status, and because of this, students from all economic backgrounds can feel comfortable on campus.
