College Prowler Take

Drinking and smoking pot are a big part of the culture here, but many students choose not to partake and get through four years without feeling any pressure. A documentary was filmed at UCSB asking people on campus how long it would take them to “hook up a gram,” and the average answer was 10 minutes. Obviously, drugs are definitely available. Cocaine, ecstasy, and mushrooms are the other drugs that frequent Isla Vista, but students say that they don’t see these harder drugs if they’re not looking for them.

For the most part, students do not overly abuse drugs to the point that they fail out of classes and don’t graduate. It really is up to you whether you participate in the drug scene or not, and this level of participation translates into what drugs you will and won’t see on campus. If you’re looking, you’ll probably find a variety of illegal substances. If not, then it’s likely that you won’t see too much drug use, especially with the harder ones.

I don’t even think of pot as a drug anymore. Every job I have had here, my co-workers and employees smoke. Half of my friends’ parents smoke. Seriously, I forget that it isn’t legal.

As for drugs, if you like them, then UCSB is the place to be. In Santa Barbara, it just seems a lot more convenient. For instance, in my household alone, there were four dealers. And on my street, there were at least six or seven other houses you could’ve gone to. If you want ecstasy, crack, or anything at all, I can’t imagine it to be too hard to find. With that said, there were a couple of drug busts in my neighborhood.

Drugs are available if you want them. I am not into the drug scene, but I have friends who have done anything from pot to ecstasy to cocaine. If you want it, you can find it.

Big If You Want It to Be

A

Drinking is pretty much the norm 3 nights a week. Isla Vista is a VERY weed friendly town. Most people smoke at least occasionally and few even consider weed a drug. Behind pot and alcohol, the most popular "real" drugs are probably ecstasy and cocaine. Psychedelics are also popular within certain groups (LSD and Mushrooms mainly). All drugs are widely available if you want them, but will never be forced upon you. Most people are broke and don't even want you knowing when they have stuff on them. Law enforcement doesn't seek you out, but if you're doing something stupid you will be stopped and searched.
