Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

“Sucks” and “lame” are the two most often-used words when it comes to parking on campus and in Isla Vista. The campus itself has enough spaces to accommodate all of the cars, but that does not mean that students will find a space anywhere close to where they are headed. Students can only buy a parking permit if they can prove that they are a “commuter” who lives more than two miles from campus. Overall, parking is a nightmare—and even more so in Isla Vista.

Isla Vista has no guarantees on parking. UCSB students quickly become the world’s best parallel parkers, managing to squeeze cars into spaces they would never have attempted before. If students don’t get a reserved parking space that comes with their house or apartment, they usually plan on spending at least five to ten minutes driving around in search of a spot, and do not naively assume that the police are going to let anything slide when it comes to tickets. It’s probably starting to make a little more sense why everyone is in love with his or her bike around here.

Parking Good, but Restrictive and Expensive

There are plenty of places to park on campus, including a huge parking structure, but many of the parking lots have strange times when its alright for students to park there, so you have to be careful where you park at any time. Also, the less time youve been at the school, the more expensive parking permits are.

Costly, but Worth It

I have a car, but wouldnt have been able to afford the permit if it weren't for some friends that pitched in. Overall, it was worth it though, because of the ease to get to downtown Santa Barbara and anywhere else. If you do not have a car though, that's totally fine. Biking is big here, so everything is within walking or biking distance.

If You Don't Have a Permit - Don't Park!

Parking on campus is so expensive! it costs a minimum of three dollars. even if i just need to run in and drop off a paper i still have to pay for parking. this is because the school thrives on taking money from students without parking passes. $45 dollar parking tickets if you're even one minute over the time limit.

Getting a Parking Permit

As long as you live more than two miles away from campus, you can purchase a parking permit. Freshmen who live on campus can buy a year parking permit, although it may be a long walk from their dorm to their parking space—it’s determined through a lottery. Three-hour and daily passes are sold everyday and night to those who would like to park on campus but do not have a permit.
