Quick StatsBest Ways to Get Around Town
- Bike
- Chip in for gas and borrow your friend's car
- Start walkin . . . use the beach as your reference point, and you can find practically everything. However, you should know that the coast curves, so sometimes the ocean is south and sometimes it is west.
- Take the bus
How to Get to the Airport
- A cab ride to the Airport costs $20, but only because it is a flat rate. The airport is actually next to campus. Convince your roommate to drive you.
- Take the "airport" exit from the 217 Freeway.
College Prowler Take
You can survive without a car at UCSB—in fact, most students prefer to not have to deal with the horrible parking scene. Bikes are the most popular form of personal transportation, and students say that you can get just about anywhere on the bus. With that said, having a car, especially if you live off campus, is incredibly convenient. If you get a job, want to go grocery shopping, catch a movie, or just want to get out of the dorms for the weekend, it’s much easier to use your car instead of planning a bus route. The buses do not run so often that you can just go to a random bus stop and wait a couple of minutes—you have to plan out your day ahead of time to coincide with the bus if you want to go anywhere outside of Isla Vista or campus. The bus system is reliable, clean, and free, so no one can complain too much, but as a backup plan, you might want to be really nice to your suitemate who brought a car to school. Bring a bike if you can—but don’t forget a bike lock.

The bus system is extremely useful. It's free with your student sticker, and you can go virtually anywhere. The 24x is the most used by students. It quickly takes people downtown, to the edges of Isla Vista, to the dorm Santa Catalina, and to a nearby marketplace.

Don’t have a car if you are a freshman—you don’t need it, and it’s not worth it. I have been here for three years without a car. You can always take the bus. |
Public Transportation
Free with your student ID. Schedules are on all the buses. They don’t run very late at night, so be sure to plan ahead.
