Worst Things

  1. There is no football team.
  2. The administrative staff is really impersonal - nobody really makes an effort to help students, and they have to be responsible for double-checking their own credits. It takes a lot of effort to figure out where to go and what to do.

  4. Isla Vista has bad parking and loud partying.
  5. Nobody wants a relationship.
  6. There is a high cost of living.
  7. The really bad landlords and no rent control in Isla Vista.
  8. The streets are frequently dirty and full of trash after weekend nights.
  9. Restaurants and movie theatres downtown close too early.
  10. Cops are heavy-handed on ticketing.

Drugs at UCSB

UCSB has a huge alcohol abuse program. It's students are known for drinking to the point of blacking out Thursday-Saturday night. While not all students take part in this party scene, a large amount of students do. The study drugs come out mostly during midterms and finals weeks. Quite a few students go on these drugs while at the library, but peer pressure doesn't seem high.

Housing Pros and Cons

There are so many close apartments and houses available for rent close to campus, but a lot of them are not affordable for me. I subleased from some friends in the summer and their landlord did not care about their complaints at all (mice, broken sliding doors and windows). The community of Isla Vista is also sort of scary to me because of occasional violence related to parties and all of the noise. There are some options of some nicer apartments owned by the university.
