Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The focus at UCSC is obviously not on athletics seeing as how the University doesn’t even have a football team. The gym is rather small, and the teams don’t draw huge crowds. The fields, however, have the best view of perhaps any practice area in the country. It is an unusual day when you don’t see students on the field playing soccer and running around the track while taking in the gorgeous ocean views. Newcomers to the campus are sure to “ooh and ahh” over the athletic fields, but the students here denote the playing fields as simply “a view.” The Banana Slugs are not widely known for their school spirit or their school pride.

However, club and intramural sports are very popular on campus. There are many sports clubs, which are between varsity sports and IMs in terms of commitment and competition levels. There are strong clubs for ultimate Frisbee, rugby, cycling, baseball, men’s soccer, equestrian, and more. Clubs are for people who love the sport, yet don’t want athletics to take over their lives. There is an enormous intramural program at UCSC, and on any given Friday afternoon, the beautiful fields are packed with students. The leagues fill up quickly, so you have to register your team early or else file to be a “free agent” who could get called by teams that need extra people. While varsity sports are not an emphasis at UCSC, there is still a large interest in recreation. A major problem with putting athletic programs on the back-burner is that there is the lack of outside funding. Even at the varsity level, teams have to do major fundraising to help their team survive. For club sports, players have to pay for their own uniforms, transportation, and so on. Playing intramurals costs money, as well. However, most students who are involved in any sort of athletic activity in Santa Cruz generally seem to think it is worth the money.

Fairly Active If You're Into Sports

If you're on a team, then you're gold with athletics. Not entirely sure about fan support or visible/heard school spirit. UCSC has a good athletics program, but we don't have a football field or team which is kind of the root of all school spirit. But the athletics are active if you're on it or into it. Otherwise, the rest of the school kind of turns a blind eye to sports.

Most Popular Sports

None of the sports at UCSC have really huge followings. People come out occasionally to basketball and volleyball games, but large crowds are really a rare sight. If you expect to see people at any sporting event, go to the IM sports. That is where the crowd gathers, if it gathers at all.

Most Overlooked Teams

Most sports at UCSC are fact overlooked, but the men’s tennis team won its sixth NCAA national team championship. The women’s golf team is also strong.

School Spirit

While people may not have much spirit for the sports teams at UCSC, many students are still proud to be Banana Slugs. As a matter of fact, even people that aren’t UCSC alumni have school spirit for the banana slug. Quentin Tarantino liked the mascot so much that he personally requested that John Travolta wear a UCSC T-shirt in the movie Pulp Fiction.

Getting Tickets

Students can buy tickets at the door for volleyball and basketball. They’re only a dollar. For everything else, students can get in for free.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Pogonip, Upper Campus fire roads, Music Center Path

Did You Know?

UCSC’s is well known for its banana slug mascot, but it almost became a sea lion in the 1980s when UCSC joined the NCAA. The mascot was changed because the chancellor and some athletes thought a slug didn’t have much prestige. But students revolted and the banana slug remained as UCSC's mascot.
