College Prowler Take

There are five dining halls on campus, varying only slightly in regards to the food they serve. Most UCSC students can handle the dining halls and actually find the food edible, but most students get sick of it—some literally—by the end of the year. Although the dining halls try to offer a wide array of food, it seems to get repetitive toward the end of the year. The food is served in an all-you-can-eat buffet style, so once you swipe your student ID card to get in, you can eat as much as you want. All of the dining halls have an extensive salad bar, main course options, a sandwich bar, and drinks. There are always vegetarian options, and at some of the dining halls, there is a vegan option for every meal. Every week at UCSC, sushi rollers, hired from outside sources, rotate through the dining halls.

All of the colleges on campus have a café or eatery of some sort, which include taquerias, coffee shops, and pizza joints. They are a nice alternative to the dining hall, and students with meal plans can use flexi dollars to buy food there. Favorites are the Hungry Slug, which specializes in sandwiches and Mexican food; the Stevenson Coffee House, which offers delicious baked goods and a great atmosphere; and the Kresge Café, where you can score a great burger and fries for a decent price. Joe's Pizza & Subs is located on central campus and is a popular place due to its prime location, decent food, and because it is the only place on campus that serves beer. It gets crowded on Fridays when they serve $2 pints. A bit of advice: Make sure you watch your flexi dollars. It’s easier than you think to empty your account once you start to grow tired of dining hall food. Oh yeah, and don’t forget the Tums.

The food on campus is generally pretty good. The problem I find is that a lot of it is redundant. But, I have heard horror stories from friends who attend other schools, so I think that, overall, the food here is better than most other universities. Most freshmen and students who live on campus—besides those who live in the apartments—have a seven-day meal plan, but it is definitely possible to get by with a five-day meal plan that excludes weekend meals.

The food on campus is much better than I had expected it to be. Freshman year I loved it, but I get tired of it pretty quickly now. The food is all good quality though, and most of my meals are pretty tasty.

The food is pretty good for dining...

The food is pretty good for dining hall food, but it could be better. I wish that College 9's dining hall had a smoothie station like Crown and Merrill's dining hall. It doesn't even have to have fresh fruit, just as long as there is a pretty good selection of frozen fruits to make a smoothie out of. It would also be nice if there was real ice cream, rather than just the self-serve frozen yogurt. We should have a better variety of main dishes each day, as well. I like the salad bar, all the breads and sandwich stations, the cappuccino, and cereal. Also, we should have chocolate chip cookies more often—warm, soft, and chewy cookies are the best. Tacos Moreno is the best place ever!

All of the dining halls are...

All of the dining halls are surprisingly good, and each of them is known for something different. Each college also has its own specialty café type of place. Tacos Moreno at Merrill has really good Mexican food—the best on campus—and The Hungry Slug at Porter has amazing milkshakes. Those places are nice because they take flexi-dollars—$50 that is put onto your student ID card so you don't have to carry cash—and it is something besides dining hall food. There are enough options on campus—even within the dining halls—so you don't get sick of it.

Places around campus like Joe's...

Places around campus like Joe's Pizza & Subs near the bookstore or the Owl's Nest at Kresge College have good food that's a welcome change from dining hall fare. The dining hall food isn't terrible, but after a little while, the bland flavors all start to taste the same.
