Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While most people are impressed with the speed of the Internet connection and the quality of the computer labs, the general consensus is that it is still beneficial to bring your own computer. Labs are nice and normally convenient, but for sheer comfort, nothing beats typing up a paper at 3 in the morning in your Deputy Dog pajamas. If you don’t have your own PC, then you will be spending a lot of time in labs since it is necessary in many classes to use a computer for assignments and/or class updates. Additionally, if you move off campus, the labs are less convenient because you might not live near them. Throughout your college years here, the computer labs will generally be available when you need them, otherwise, you can type papers and write e-mail in the comfort of your own room.

Computers on campus have all that you need, although many of the labs are Mac exclusive, so you may be occasionally out of luck if you need to use a PC. The labs are also very convenient if you need to use special computer hardware that you may not own personally. Burners, scanners, and digital media equipment are all available on UCSC’s computers. On the downside, most computer labs are not open all night, printing is not free, and sometimes there are classes in the labs and you cannot use them. The best advice is to either come to school with your own computer, stalk the labs until you find out what times are best to come, or do your work in segments, so not being able to get on a computer for an hour won’t ruin your life. Procrastinating will get you nowhere!

The computer labs are well kept with plenty of room. Printing is free if you need it and is not out of the way. The wireless is proficient and works well in most of the campus.

UCSC Computer Labs

The computer labs at UCSC are often overflowing with students during the stressful times of midterms and finals (or whenever your immediate need for printing is greatest), but in general the availability of lab and printing facilities is good. The Cowell computer lab is even open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which is certainly convenient for any night owl students living on-campus.

Computers at UC Santa Cruz

The computers here are easily accessible, and they are in good conditions. The wifi works great in most areas, and printers are available to students in libraries and computer labs. Internet speed is quite fast, and although I have a laptop and it is convenient, the school provides students access to computers so it's not necessary to have a personal computer.
