Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

When asked about drugs, most students would agree that there is a large amount of marijuana on and around campus. Almost all UCSC students tend to put marijuana and drinking in the same category and that may be apparent at your first Santa Cruz party. Marijuana is the most commonly used drug around town, but there are other drugs that are becoming popular within the UCSC community, such as LSD, mushrooms, and acid. Students say that if you don’t drink or do drugs, there is not a lot of pressure to do it, although drugs and alcohol will be around at parties or in the dorms, whether you like it or not. If you want, you can request to live on a sober floor in any of the dorm buildings.

Although laid-back, UCSC is a party school in many ways, but it is a different party scene that often includes smoking pot, hanging out, and listening to some tunes rather than raging all night long. Drugs of all sorts are available in the dorms, and it takes little effort to get a hold of some weed at UCSC. But, don’t get the wrong impression here. There are people who choose to focus more on their schoolwork and opt to stay sober, even on weekends, and they can find their niche because there are enough things going on in Santa Cruz besides partying and doing drugs. However, drugs are around most of the time, and many find it acceptable to experiment.
