Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Although it may not be noticeable in the beginning, there are a lot more girls than guys at UCSC, so there seem to be more options for the male population. There is a wide variety of different looks and styles here, but most agree that students are attractive in both the looks and personality departments. UCSC has hippies, punks, surfers, and basic average-looking people, as well. If you like any of those types, you’ll find it rather easy to find hot people here. However, some students say that the overall population is not at all attractive. In their defense, to find a good girl—or especially a good guy—who isn’t with anyone, you have to look really hard. Many girls hit the bar or party scene trying to find Mr. Right (or Mr. Right Now), and once they start mingling, they’ll often find someone who is satisfactory to their tastes. From there, it’s a matter of trying to find out whether there’s anything beneath the looks. If you’re looking for lots of one-night stands, you might have good freshman and sophomore years, but there are simply not enough people around to keep it up for four years. Well, that and the fact that after a certain point, your reputation may definitely begin to precede you.

You are far more likely to see someone walking to class in Garfield pajamas than to see someone in a short skirt and heels. A positive thing about UCSC, however, is that many students don’t judge people based on looks and appearances. People find hotness in other aspects, like personality and style. If you’re really stuck on appearance, the best advice would be to look around.

No Make up Doesn't Equal Ugly

Not many girls dress fancy or wear high heals, but they are all extremely down to earth and cute. If you are into fake and smudge their nail polish then you won't find a lot of 'hot' people here. But if you like real girls who aren't afraid to be themselves then come here. The girls here are usually fairly athletic and almost always extremely smart.

Laid Back

the typical student at UCSC is casual and laid back. Weekends students can really let loose and look good. Since the campus is large, there are lots of different types of people from computer nerds to preppy jocks. There is a person for everyone!

Very Chill

There are attractive people on campus if you like the natural look. Clothing choices seem to be very laid back and your unlikely to see a girl sporting heels or even wearing makeup.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

The social scene at UCSC is very laid-back. In such a temperate, aesthetically pleasing environment, it is easy to start a conversation with someone on or around campus. If you're the type of person who enjoys outside activities, joining a group can make you a lot of friends very quickly. If you're less of a "social butterfly," then you may have some trouble, but it seems that people usually open up quite a bit during their freshman year of school. You would be hard-pressed to find a shy upperclassman. It's next to impossible to leave UCSC without a stockpile of good friends of either gender.

Hookups or Relationships?

The dating scene varies in Santa Cruz. Relationships are commonplace, but hookups definitely happen, especially after big parties or nights at the bars. Basically, it depends on the person and what they are looking for.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

There are plenty of places to meet guys or girls in Santa Cruz. If you're of age, hanging out at the bar seems to be a fairly consistent method to meet people of the opposite sex. If bars aren't your thing, or you're not of age, check out the party scene in East Santa Cruz or anywhere on campus. There are a variety of people there, and most of them are going for the same exact reasons you're there. If you're not the partying type, fear not. Try social organizations, for a start. Not only will you be doing something productive, you'll be meeting people, as well. If you're not the outspoken type, all is not lost for you either. Friends that you already have possess an incredible knack at finding someone appropriate for you, whether you ask them to or not.

Dress Code

UCSC doesn't have an official dress code and students have a very diverse range of appearances. It is cool here to be unique and different. The punk look is pretty fashionable in UCSC, as is the hippie look. However, the typical student is pretty casual, often just wearing jeans and a sweatshirt to school and maybe dressing it up a little bit for parties.
