Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

With its looming trees and dark trails, some may initially find campus a bit frightening, but UCSC is a very safe place. Faculty members pride themselves on the safety of the forests and surrounding areas, and although the dark can be scary for some students, campus is well monitored by police officers and security guards. Walking by yourself at night either downtown or on campus is never a good idea, and using common sense is highly recommended for any college student—and human being for that matter. Most students feel safest in the dorm buildings, and the Campus Safety Officers (CSOs) are always around if help is needed.

Other than the CSOs and the campus police, there are also checkpoints for vehicles coming in after 8 p.m.—they will not be permitted on campus unless somebody in the car has a valid student ID. This is effective in preventing people from coming in through the only two roads into campus, but the system seems a bit irrelevant or even useless because people could easily walk or ride a bus onto campus without being checked. Another main security feature is the blue-light emergency phone system. These phones are present at most colleges, and they are basically emergency phones set up at various points throughout campus. That way, if you are walking across campus and something bad would happen, like say a mountain lion attack, you can go to the phones and instantly be connected to the police. For the record, no UCSC student has ever been attacked by a mountain lion.

Totally Safe

The police are always around. We have a fire station on campus. The campus of Santa Cruz is safe but the town isn't.

Very Safe

The campus is vast and there is lots of forests to walk though so at night it can be really dark. Despite the size, I have never felt that I was not safe on campus.

Really Safe

I have always felt safe on campus and even walking in the dark in no big deal. The CSOs are always nice and willing to help you if you have a concern.
