Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Parties are always popular in Santa Cruz on the weekends, although anything too out of control gets easily broken up by local authorities. Parties tend to be on the mellow side, particularly on campus. Sitting around and throwing back a few beers with friends is often the norm. There are a number of good bars in downtown Santa Cruz that have different specials and themes on different nights of the week. You can usually find something to do, but if you go to the bars a lot, then you'll probably get tired of them because there are not that many. There are several places you can “get your freak on” on various nights, but there are few big clubs in the area.

Some students say that Santa Cruz has great nightlife, while others find it altogether boring. Whether you dig the scene or not really depends on your taste. If you are into huge fraternity parties or large techno-pounding-ecstasy-infested clubs, Santa Cruz does not offer any types of these establishments, but there are decent-sized parties and plenty of bars to choose from. If you like more chill hang-out sessions, Santa Cruz is a great place to be. If you get here and it seems that you fall somewhere in the middle, then larger cities with wilder, more diverse nightspots are only a short distance away. So, students at UCSC can either engage in the activities on and around campus or go out and look for a little bit of variety. It seems that there is enough to keep students occupied here, although it may not be enough to keep them interested. Drunken college students can be so picky!

Well...

People wander out to the meadow to get high with their buddies. There's a lot of underage drinking, on and off campus. After the first week, the parties on campus die down a little, but there are apparently parties in town. Transportation is tricky. Unless you know someone with a car, you are stuck using the bus or a cab. The campus buses no longer run all night, so if you're planning on partying in town, it might be best to hitch a ride.

Not Much Nightlife

The nightlife can depend, for 21 and over there are bars and some dancing venues. But for the younger students between 18-20, there are only some house parties and hang out places, but there are no 18 and over clubs in Santa Cruz or dancing venues for entertainment. House parties are sometimes free and it can get good sometimes. There are beaches and nearby cities, such as San Francisco and San Jose but the transportation to get there is not reliable, since the buses stop running after 12am.

Tons of Nightlife, Not All My Cup of Tea Though

There are lots of clubs and bars here, but I don't drink. There have been some great musicians playing at places in town, like Barenaked Ladies, Weird Al, and lots I can't remember. If I could afford the ticket prices, the 'music scene' here is great. Tons of parties, clubs, and events on campus too. I hear ambulances and fire engines taking away drunken freshmen quite often. The college housing is super noisy at night. But the library often stays open until midnight if you prefer. Once the quarter gets rolling and the regular bus schedules start up, it's easy to get around town at all hours. Aside from all that, the shopping is pretty good. No actual malls or anything like that, but several movie theaters and lots of novel, overpriced places and a good thrift shop.

Organization Parties

It is common to hear about parties thrown by sports teams or students in Greek life. Most parties, though, are just thrown by a group of friends or a particular organization. UCSC is not known for being a huge party school like UCLA or UC Santa Barbara, but it certainly holds its own.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

It’s pretty easy to find stuff to do if you are under 21. House parties and dorm parties are popular, and some of the local clubs including The Catalyst offer 18-and-over nights. If you want to party, you can always find one, but many under-21 students head downtown and catch one of the various midnight movies or hang out at one of Santa Cruz’s coffee shops.
