Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Santa Cruz has some great restaurants worth checking out as soon as you get here. For such a small town, there are a variety of flavors and options, and every student has his or her own personal favorites. College students generally like cheap food, and the lowest-priced places in Santa Cruz are the taquerias or pizza joints. Planet Fresh and Los Pinos are favorite places for burritos, and Pizza My Heart and Woodstock’s Pizza offer discounts for UCSC students. Sushi and Thai food are also popular in Santa Cruz, and there are a variety of restaurants to satisfy cravings for these Asian delights. Several good breakfast places are scattered throughout Santa Cruz, with the favorites being Café Brasil and Santa Cruz Diner.

When it comes to off-campus eateries, Santa Cruz has everything from fine dining to stuffing-your-face-with-cheap-food restaurants. There are restaurants with only vegetarian and vegan food, and there are also places that serve hamburger and steak sandwiches. When living in the dorms, eating off campus in Santa Cruz can be a wonderful break from the dining halls. The best advice that a new student can get as far as off-campus dining is concerned is to try and eat off campus at least once a month. If you go off campus for your meals all the time, you might grow tired of it, and you’re also going to waste a lot of money. If you eat off campus less than once a month, you’re going to get sick of the meal plan food pretty quickly, and you’re not going to get the chance to explore all of the dining options that Santa Cruz has to offer. Besides, Joe’s Pizza will still be here when you return.

Lots of Choices!

Santa Cruz offers a wide variety of choices for off campus dining. There are not a lot of big chain or fast food restaurants, which I like! Most restaurants in the area offer plenty of choices for alternative diets, such as vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free.

Unique Eateries, No Chains

Because Santa Cruz instituted an embargo on chain or franchise businesses in the early 90's, the cuisine is local and unique. Taco Bell and Jack in the Box were built before the embargo, and Starbucks circumvented it by going inside the Safeway. Popular places include Cafe Brazil, Woodstock's, Falafel, Burger and that Bagelry off Laurel. There are a couple all-you-can-eat places. There's froyo. There are a lot of ethnic and vegetarian places. Many places deliver, though it takes a while on weekends. If you can't live without In and Out or Krispy Creme, you'll be disappointed, but you get to experience a place that doesn't just look and taste like every other place in California.

Off Campus Dining at UC Santa Cruz

There are many places to go eat off campus, especially in downtown. There is a variety of different types of food. There are several fancy restaurants as well as fast food places. The cost depends on where you choose to eat. Downtown has Indian, Greek, Mexican, Italian, and various other types of food. The Surfrider Cafe is one of the best places to eat. It has a number of options, and the service is great. The atmosphere is also nice; it is lit with dim candles but is still casual. It is pretty convenient to go downtown. The buses here are free for students so we are able to go whenever they are running. Many places also have student discounts.
