Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Parking is not an easy task at UCSC. There are dozens and dozens of parking tickets handed out each day, and the officers who give them never seem to show any mercy. If you are running late and decide to park, say, in front of a fire hydrant, you’ll get ticketed. If you have a car, most students recommend that you leave it at your house during the day and take the bus or ride your bike. Getting a parking permit is really expensive, and you don’t even get to park very close to where your classes once you have one. You should plan on coming to class about 15 to 20 minutes early on any given day—if you get a parking pass, you will learn this game and learn it well. There are rules of etiquette when it comes to stalking the lot, but you will definitely get the occasional person who will pull into a space that you have claimed as your own by sitting in the correct aisle for 20 minutes. Although they may deserve it, these people should by no means be run over.

Many people without permits drive to campus and try to find one of the limited meter spots. This is a noble idea, but it’s sort of a shot in the dark. It can work sometimes, but not very often. The main piece of advice to pass on is don’t bring your car to UCSC, especially your first two years.

Not Good, Expensive!

The parking situation is very limited. First of all freshmen are not allowed to bring their cars to campus, and other students that do bring their cars have to pay a fee of about $400 per quarter. If a student parks their car on campus without a permit they will get a ticket. The availability is okay, there are lots of spaces but there are many students who have permits so sometimes it can be difficult to find parking near your home or class.

Can Get Expensive

Even if you're living off-campus, you can make do without a car. A or B parking permits are like $600 a year or something. People with the cheapest parking permits park in one of the three Remote Parking Lots and walk or bus to classes from there. Parking tickets are around $50 or $60 and are inevitable. Consider one parking ticket per quarter your price for having a car at UCSC.

Facts

Getting a Parking Permit

Purchasing a parking permit isn't difficult. It is recommended that you try and buy your permit online if possible, so you don't have to stand in line all day. If you aren't net savvy, you can always stop into the main building on High Street and buy your permit the old-fashioned way.

Did You Know?

Best Places to Find a Parking Spot
If you are planning on having a parking pass (once you’re eligible to get one), you should probably try to live in Porter, Oakes, or College 8. There are large parking lots there, and they’re all pretty close to the classroom buildings.

Good Luck Getting a Parking Spot Here!
Anywhere on campus. If you’re looking to park anywhere (legally) near a classroom or dining hall without a permit, good luck.

The Boot!
Okay, here’s the deal; if you have five or more citations for over 21 days, you’ll get the boot (a large lock that goes onto your wheel). Don’t worry, it gets better. Not only do you have to pay all of the late fees that you’ve acquired up to this point, you have to pay another $25 for them to take the boot back off of your car! That kids is the embodiment of evil.
