Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students agree that Santa Cruz has a pretty thorough bus system. However, many have expressed concern that as the town grows bigger, it is really hard to accommodate everyone. The buses are starting to get over-packed frequently during the day. Also, the buses run less at night and on the weekends. However, students say that once you get used to the bus system and figure out the schedules, it is really easy to get around. Campus is only a 20–30 minute ride from downtown by bus. The use of bicycles is also really popular in Santa Cruz. People are always biking around campus and taking trips downtown via the bike paths. What’s even more convenient for bikers is that if you don’t want to bike all the way up the hill to campus you don’t have to—you can attach your bike to the front of the bus, and catch a ride back to school. Don’t you just love modern technology?

Students seem happy with the transportation in Santa Cruz, as well as the surrounding area. Because of the adequate transportation, most UCSC students choose to take a bus or bike to school rather than drive. There are stops throughout the downtown area, and there is even a separate bus for east and west Santa Cruz. However, there are isolated parts of Santa Cruz that buses don’t run to, and if you live there or visit a lot, it is harder to get to school. The Greyhound buses and the Amtrak trains out of town are reliable and fairly cheap. Overall, transportation is great here, but the growing population of the school is making the streets and buses much more crowded and much crazier, too!

Buses Are the Best

The bus system is free for UCSC students and it can talk pretty much any where in Santa Cruz. It also makes it pretty easy to get to and from the San Jose airport.

Really Good Transportation!

Public transportation is really good around campus and out of campus. There are shuttles and night buses! And the bus drivers are really nice!

Bus, Shuttle, Parking

The buses at our school is very convenient. We have the school buses and also the city buses that run through the school, which means there is always buses running and its easy for the kids off campus to get to class. If you're a student and you have your id, you're on the bus for free whether it is the campus bus or the city bus. City buses charge if you don't have your id. Unfortunately for me, the area where I live doesn't have a bus line that goes from my apartment to campus, but I have a car, which is very convenient. Getting a parking permit is pretty expensive unless you purchase car-pool (when you share a permit with one, or a few other people. But, that means only one car can be parked on campus at a time). Because campus is at a higher elevation than the rest of the city, it does kill gas to drive up and down constantly, but thank god I have a gas saver Honda Accord.
