Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students agree that Santa Cruz has a pretty thorough bus system. However, many have expressed concern that as the town grows bigger, it is really hard to accommodate everyone. The buses are starting to get over-packed frequently during the day. Also, the buses run less at night and on the weekends. However, students say that once you get used to the bus system and figure out the schedules, it is really easy to get around. Campus is only a 20–30 minute ride from downtown by bus. The use of bicycles is also really popular in Santa Cruz. People are always biking around campus and taking trips downtown via the bike paths. What’s even more convenient for bikers is that if you don’t want to bike all the way up the hill to campus you don’t have to—you can attach your bike to the front of the bus, and catch a ride back to school. Don’t you just love modern technology?

Students seem happy with the transportation in Santa Cruz, as well as the surrounding area. Because of the adequate transportation, most UCSC students choose to take a bus or bike to school rather than drive. There are stops throughout the downtown area, and there is even a separate bus for east and west Santa Cruz. However, there are isolated parts of Santa Cruz that buses don’t run to, and if you live there or visit a lot, it is harder to get to school. The Greyhound buses and the Amtrak trains out of town are reliable and fairly cheap. Overall, transportation is great here, but the growing population of the school is making the streets and buses much more crowded and much crazier, too!

Buses Really Help

The school buses and metro buses come by often during school days. However, on weekend metro buses come by much more infrequent so you have to check online for what time buses come. Even if the bus says that it will be at Oakes bus stop, at a certain time, it will come by 15 minutes later.

UCSC Transportation

The Santa Cruz metro is available to most off campus students and arrives at destinations regularly. The loop and upper campus buses are really helpful in getting around campus and getting to class on time. The off campus parking passes cost way too much and many of the lots fill up by 10a.m. so the pass is sometimes pointless.
