Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School

  • Don’t use the roommate matching system. Find your own.
  • Each student is allowed to use two grade forgivenesses.
  • Laptops are available at the library on the third floor.
  • Study rooms are also available at the library.
  • Take lots of pictures because things change fast.
  • The library’s main floor is really the second floor.
  • UCF is a satellite campus.
  • UCF professors use the plus/minus system.
  • You must dial an area code for all numbers, including local calls.
  • You must file your intent to graduate one semester before you plan to graduate!

Tips to Succeed

  • Don’t get lost in the shuffle; introduce yourself to all of your professors. It’s helpful if they recognize you and know that you are serious about your studies.
  • Go to class, even if there is no attendance policy (at least once a week).
  • Rent study rooms at the library when studying with classmates.

Urban Legends

  • If you walk over the Pegasus symbol in the center of the student union, you’ll receive bad luck and the UCF sports teams will lose.

School Spirit

Every fall semester, UCF has a designated week called Spirit Week. The week ends with the homecoming football game. Each night of Spirit Week, a different event takes place. An outdoor movie is shown on campus ground in front of the Arena one night. Another night, a well-known comedian (Dave Attell and Bill Maher have performed in the past) usually performs in the arena, often accompanied by a popular band (Busta Rhymes and 311 have played in the past). A skit night/competition is held in the arena (dominated by Greek organizations) during the week, as well.

The highlight of Spirit Week is “Spirit Splash.” On this one ccasion, students are permitted to jump into the Reflection Pond. Special preparation goes into this event, and thousands of students join in the fun and jump in the fountain while a band plays in the background. A pep rally hypes up the crowd for the homecoming game. A parade is held before the big game, complete with many decorated floats. Many of the floats are built by UCF students that are members of a fraternity or sorority. Spirit Week is a blast! Be sure to get a free T-shirt with the homecoming theme printed on it. T-shirts are given out throughout the week.
