Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

At the University of Chicago, it's not uncommon for someone not to realize that the University has a football team until after he or she graduates. The general student body gets more excited about a good grade on a calculus test than a football tailgate. However, school spirit and interest in athletics is continuously growing. With the use of the Common Application, the University is attracting more mainstream students who are taking a genuine interest in the University's sports. They should—because a majority of the teams dominates the UAA (University Athletic Association conference) and is recognized nationally within the division. The sports games do have some attendance, but the majority of fans is other athletes or friends of the players, not random students.

Outside of the athletic scene, there is a feeling of school spirit. However, instead of banding together to cheer on the Maroons, students tend to rally around the difficulty of the school. It’s a perverse type of school spirit, but it still is a unifying attitude among students. Students show individual house spirit and pride during intramural sports, which are very popular on campus. There are also some club sports—like crew, ultimate Frisbee, rugby, and lacrosse—that have a fair amount of participation. If students aren’t interested in sports, they can still take advantage of the amazing facilities. Ratner Athletics Center is modern and well maintained, and Henry Crown Field House has a classic-gym feel. Stagg Field and the tennis courts next to it are also open to the public. Basically, school spirit and varsity athletics exist, but there is still more room for both of them to grow.

Although I am not a varsity athlete, I have participated in several intramural or house-based teams, including basketball, soccer, and flag football. The facilities are fine, and it's a great way to get some exercise, have some fun, and meet some other kids at your school.

Most Popular Sports

All sports have some sort of following, no matter how small. The most attended are football, soccer, basketball, and volleyball. The games are generally exciting, and the teams have a fair amount of national recognition within Division III.

Most Overlooked Teams

Every one. Sports are generally overlooked by the student body. However, they do have a fan base of athletes or ex-high school athletes.

School Spirit

There is a very perverted school spirit. More people tend to cheer about the depressing workload or socially awkward people. You'll see more shirts that say "University of Chicago: Hell Does Freeze Over" or "University of Chicago: Where the squirrels are more aggressive than the guys and cuter than the girls" than any shirt that actually says "Go Maroons." However, school spirit is continually growing as the University attracts more mainstream students with the use of the Common Application. There are more and more tailgates for football games or themed nights for basketball. Students also take a lot of pride in their intramural teams, showing spirit in their particular houses.
