College Prowler Take
It sounds kind of clichèd, but computers don’t really matter at the University of Chicago. Public computers are plentiful, and most of the student body is addicted to e-mail in one form or another. Your professors and advisors will also keep in touch with you via email, and occasionally you will have assignments due in online drop-boxes. However, at Chicago, the reliance upon email is tinged with intellectual pragmatism. The computer is, of course, a tool, and that tool’s job is to aid in the transfer of information. To that end, computers as tools are everywhere. There are Sun Microsystems stations across the campus which provide e-mail access and Internet browsing. There is an expansive network of wireless Internet access points, and any student with a laptop equipped with a wireless Ethernet card will be able to browse from almost anywhere. Both Windows and Mac computers are available for purchase at a student discount price in the campus computer store. If, however, you have yet to join the masses of computer owners, do not fear. Nothing electronic is so pressing at the University of Chicago that it cannot be dealt with on a public computer. Every dorm, every classroom building, every library, and the student center all have public computer labs. If you need to write a paper, you can sit down at one of the many public hard-drive equipped computers in one of the libraries. Syllabi, paper assignments, handouts, lecture notes, and even full texts are available on the Internet through a program called “Chalk.”

The computer labs are great! They are very high-tech! I loved them. The one I visited the most was in Crerar, a library about two blocks from where my dorm was. I would still bring your own computer. You might not always want to go out. |

The school has a very good fast computer network. There are a few computer labs that have about 40 computers each. Sometimes they’re a little crowded, but it’s not that bad. If you have your own computer, you may want to bring it, only because it’s convenient for writing those late-night papers. Chicago gets very cold, and sometimes it’s just better to stay indoors. |

Computer labs are generally not very crowded. I would recommend bringing your own computer, though—it is much more convenient and practical. I prefer a laptop over a desktop because of mobility. |

Bringing your own computer is nice, but there are big, accessible labs available. |
