Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While Greek life at the University of Chicago is relatively small, it is an incredibly positive force on campus. Greek life is definitely growing, and Greeks are very active on campus, especially with their philanthropy work. Some of the fraternities have houses, while none of the sororities do. However, many Greeks decide to live with their sisters or brothers, so there are apartments that are associated with specific groups. The group is tight-knit, and the organizations have a lot of interaction with each other. All of the Greek organizations participate in Greek Week during the spring quarter, and the members of the IFC (Interfraternity Council) and Panhel (Panhellenic Council) compete in "Sing" during the reading period of spring quarter. The Greek community is rapidly expanding, and new chapters are being colonized every year.

Greeks and non-Greeks are very friendly toward each other. There isn’t a clear or hostile distinction between the two. Non-Greeks come to all of the Greek philanthropy events and other activities on campus. Many of the fraternities host parties that the entire campus attends, too. As a whole, Greek life is a great opportunity to get more involved on campus if you’re interested, but if it’s not your thing, your world won’t be dominated by Greeks.

Popular, but Not Over-Bearing

The Greek life is present on campus, often hosting parties on the weekends, but not that many people are involved in the actual frats. It is not at all a big deal if you are not in a frat, and there are many options besides going to frat parties

...Huh?

It's been rising in recent years, but the Greek presence is still very, very quiet. There is a noisy frat house across from the Seminary Co-op that can be entertaining, though.

There but Not Overwhelming

There's definitely greek life on campus, but you don't feel left out socially if you don't go to greek events.
