Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The average University student is a little quirky; he or she has a hint of "nerd" in them that allows them to succeed at such an academically rigorous school. Students are also interested in anything and everything, from sports to the arts to music to film to politics to economics. They know how to work hard, but they also know how to blow off steam and enjoy themselves. Because there are so many different people, there is definitely a group somewhere to fit in with. People are usually pretty friendly; however, you do have some people that are socially awkward. A life spent immersed in schoolwork means that social skills can be lacking. These people, though, are only a small portion, and on the whole, the general student body is social, outgoing, and well rounded, creating a vibrant social scene.

The girl-to-guy ratio is pretty even. People date on campus, but if you go through your four years without having dated a fellow student, that wouldn’t be abnormal. The relationship scene is pretty relaxed. There is some exclusive dating, but there are also random hookups. Really, the social and dating scene at the University of Chicago is whatever you make of it. If you’d rather spend your Saturday night in the library, you won’t feel like there is a big social scene. But if you choose to explore campus activities and go out on weekends, you’ll have a great time.

Getting Better

I think the university is trying to sever its image of a purely nerd school with kids who have poor hygiene. The girls are noticeably more attractive, transitioning to a Zoey Deschanel-like class.

Ambitious

Students at UChicago are usually dedicated to one thing: getting to where they want to go. This is pretty attractive, and most students find themselves linking up with someone who has the same ambitions as they do.

Guys and Girls at Uchicago

It's a given that everyone here is smart (not pretentious, in-your-face smart, but more subtle, witty smart), but folks here are pretty good-looking too. Some people dress up for class, but on the whole, the atmosphere is more casual (people usually wear jeans and sneakers more than they do skirts and heels, unless they're on their way to an interview, of course). Dating here happens pretty frequently. First dates can pretty much happen anywhere, at the restaurants near campus like the Med, at the on campus movie theater, or even in the library! People will sometimes take a trip downtown to go get dinner and a movie, and then come back to campus for a party at a friends apartment or frat. In terms of interests, people here really run the gamut. A lot of people are into TV shows like the Wire, the Daily Show, or Breaking Bad, and almost everyone plays IM sports with their house.

Facts

Social Scene

The social scene at the University of Chicago is incredibly diverse. People spend their weekend nights doing a ton of different things, ranging from staying in and having a study party to going out to one of the fraternities and not coming home until 5 a.m. There really is something for everyone, and most people are fairly social. The difference comes from people's definition of what "social" is. For some people, "social" is a movie night in; for others, "social" is a crazy night downtown going bar hopping. No matter where you fall on the spectrum, you'll find people to go out with you.

Hookups or Relationships?

There are a ton of different types of relationships. Some people date seriously, and if you kiss someone on the bridge over Botany Pond, you'll marry them. However, there are also a lot of random hookups. Some of them happen at the fraternity and apartment parties on campus. Because the campus is small, it might seem like there are more random hookups than there actually are.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

The A-Level of the Reg is one of the more social places on campus. Other than that, Chicago is strangely normal; people meet potential partners all over—be it in class, at the gym, waiting in line at a coffee shop, and so on.

Dress Code

Whatever you wear on campus, there will be someone in a similar outfit. People come to class in heels, some in sweats. Some are in between with jeans and sweatshirts. The school attracts all types of people, so you will also have some random crazy outfits. However, once winter hits, everyone is in boots and a big coat. There aren't a ton of different options when it's 20 F outside.

Did You Know? The motto on campus is: "University of Chicago students do it theoretically."
