Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The University hospital is a great resource for student health needs. The Student Care Center, or SCC, is specifically for students. While you have easy access to the ER and to the hospital, it can be a huge pain to schedule an appointment with the SCC. If you aren’t incredibly sick, chances are you won’t get seen. You’ll simply talk to a medical consultant, and he or she will tell you to sleep and take an Aspirin. However, if you do have a serious problem or need a prescription written, the SCC and hospital are right across the street from campus.

As for the crime side of life, you have a much different story. Hyde Park is on the South Side of Chicago. Crime comes along with that territory. Chances are, you’ll get a security alert from the dean about a crime that has happened close to campus. However, the University takes the safety of its students very seriously. The University of Chicago Police Department (UCPD) and the City of Chicago Police are always on campus and have a huge presence. There are officers stationed on different corners on campus to provide extra security. The police will follow you home if you feel unsafe, and there are emergency phones located on almost every corner of campus that can provide you with immediate assistance. The University has several shuttle routes and late-night vans to help, as well. Security alerts are sent to every student to keep them informed about what’s been happening on campus and in the neighborhood. Overall, you need to be smart about where you are walking at night. However, there are enough resources on campus that protect the safety of students that you shouldn’t have a problem with feeling safe.

Urban Safety

Campus police and security guards are all over the place; I've never felt unsafe on campus and while you have to be aware of your surroundings anywhere in Chicago I feel as safe on campus as I would downtown or in another neighborhood.

Scary at Night but Safe

sometimes the campus gets scary if you're walking alone at night but i've never felt in danger because police officers constantly survey campus.

Campus Extremely Safe

The UCPD is everywhere, all the time. Even late night, going far to frats and apartment parties, the cops will be right around the corner (but not busting parties for anything other than noise). Outside of the UCPD's area is a little more iffy. From what I've heard, it's the largest private police force in the world, and it shows. Their concerns are really only for your safety, generally avoiding any questions regarding drugs/alcohol.
