Advice

  • If you’re looking for a job on or off campus, there are a bunch of places you can go. Your first stop should always be CAPS (Career and Placement Services). While CAPS deals with a whole lot of advising, and little actual job placement, they’ll set you on course with résumé-writing workshops, (including one-on-one “walk-in hours” daily), counselors on call who can direct you to the right people and places, and most importantly, a critical eye who can ensure that you’re maximizing your efforts and not limiting yourself in your job search. Your next stop should probably be http://studentemployment.uchicago.edu, a clearinghouse Web site where the various divisions of the College and the University post job openings specifically for students who are both work/study and non-work/study. For on-campus jobs, the library is always hiring. You can make your own hours, and it’s always quiet. Just go to the Reg and fill out an application. Also, computer labs are a good place to look; ask the manager of the lab or a staff member how to apply for a job (though most hire at the beginning of the year, so start your search early). If you’re interested working in your field of study, the best place to look would be your concentration office or go directly to one of your professors—they are likely to know of a colleague who could use some extra help with research or need some themselves.
