Getting a Parking Permit

Some dormitories have parking lots which students can get permits for. First-years are not allowed to use dorm parking lots. Students who bring cars are responsible for finding parking.

College Prowler Take

Parking is a hit-or-miss proposition around Hyde Park. With an influx of professors and graduate students every day, parking spots become more precious than a rhino horn at an Asian Bazar around 10 a.m. and widely available past 4 p.m. Most students chose not to bring cars for their first couple of years since public transportation is not only easily accessible, but cheap and clean as well. As for “permits” and the like, the University’s lassiez-faire approach once again reigns supreme. Bring a car and it is your problem, not the University’s. Departments will give out permits for parking in their specific labs occasionally, or dorms that have lots will allow upperclassmen to park there, but otherwise, you’re on your own.

Though some students say that it’s pretty easy to park around here, there are not many students with cars. It isn’t necessary to bring a car to Chicago. Public transportation is easily at everyone’s disposal, and it can take you to wherever you would drive to with a car without the hassle of parking. Also, walking is a great way to get around a city. Cars are not necessary at all, but if you do bring one, keep in mind that parking may not be the easiest or most pleasant endeavor. First years aren’t supposed to have cars on campus anyhow.

Parking is horrible. Right around the main area, lots of cars are stolen. I would suggest not bringing a car, and if you do, bring something like the Club.

Cars in Chicago are stupid. You don’t need them ever; there is all this public transportation at your disposal. Unless you live around here and like to go home, there is really no point in having one.
