Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Since the University of Cincinnati joined the Big East Conference in 2005, the Bearcats have taken on bigger rivals and have had some big games. The success of the football and men’s basketball programs has put athletics at the forefront of student life at UC. Now, more than ever before, students are going to and talking about games and getting in the spirit of being a Bearcat. Every student should go to at least a few games throughout their college career, even if sports aren’t really up their alley. The energy of students, faculty, alumni, and other fans is just incredible. Generally, the crowd is decked out in red and black, and the atmosphere is buzzing with excitement. Bearcat fans are friendly, and people who don’t even know you will be cheering with you. It’s a great way to meet other students because once you start going to games, you’ll get to know people who you’ve seen before.

Many UC athletes are very talented, and the best part is they are involved off the field or court as well. Many athletes are named to academic honors, whether at UC or in the Big East Conference, and take part in community activities to help others. Most athletes don’t have a big head and will hang out and chat with you at a party or in class like they are just another student here. The teams really appreciate their fans and make the UC community a lot closer by bringing everyone together.

School Spirit

All of the varsity sports have their stadiums on campus which makes it very easy to attend games and experience all the hype on gameday. There is a very heightened sense of Bearcat pride at this school, its awesome!

Nonathletes Can Play Too

If you're not an athlete, don't think that you cannot still enjoy some athletic activities. UC opens the fields up to everyone. So whether you want to play Ultimate with some friends or make snow angels on the football field, you don't have to be an athlete to use what UC offers.

Most Popular Sports

UC has traditionally been a basketball school, with the men’s team drawing in plenty of fans. The highlight of the season is the Crosstown Shootout against inner-city rival Xavier University. This game sells out every year. The football team also creates a buzz on campus, especially when the team is playing Big East rivals like West Virginia, Pittsburgh, and Rutgers.

Most Overlooked Teams

Women’s basketball, men’s and women’s soccer, and baseball are often overlooked, but these teams also boast talented athletes. The women’s lacrosse team is pretty new, so it hasn't gained much popularity yet.

School Spirit

School spirit is on the rise among Bearcat fans. Rallycats is a student organization geared toward increasing school spirit on campus and at sporting events. Students who want to meet other spirited students or need someone to paint their body with for a football game will find this club interesting. School spirit is hit or miss though. If athletic teams are doing well, there tends to be more school spirit than when things aren’t going so well. Generally, you’ll see a lot of people wearing UC T-shirts, hooded sweatshirts, and sweatpants, which means school spirit isn’t completely dead.

Getting Tickets

Students can get free tickets to all athletic events. However, football tickets can be a little more difficult to get. Free football tickets are available 10 days before the game, and can be reserved either online or by walking up, but sell out fast. Students can purchase season tickets for $30, which prevents the need to wait in line. Men’s basketball tickets can be ordered for free online, and the tickets are e-mailed to students the morning of the game. Students can get into all other sporting events with their UC ID.

Best Place to Take a Walk

Burnett Woods, just east of the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning. Your best bet is to walk here during the day since it can get rather dangerous at night if you’re alone. You can also walk on the Campus Recreation Center's suspended walking track.
