Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

UC is primarily a commuter college, so most students don’t live in a dorm throughout their years here. Living on campus isn’t a bad option, especially if you are looking to meet new people and be close to everything UC has to offer. The residence hall staff is generally helpful and accommodating—they’ll even help you move your stuff in on your first day. There are also special interest communities that can help students meet people in their college, and it’s a good way to make friends and stay in the loop about what is going on at UC. Most students feel safe walking across campus, so you won’t have to worry about walking on dark side streets to get home. Campus is well-lit at night, and the halls generally have desk staff to ensure non-students don’t come into the dorms. It is also a shorter walk home, which is good for students who are concerned about walking alone at night.

There are some cons to on-campus housing. Some of the nicer dorms tend to be reserved for upperclassmen so you need to be prepared to live in older buildings until you reach upperclassman status. Some dorm residents also complain about being forced to have a meal plan, so they tend to move into off-campus housing after their first year. On-campus housing also tends to be more expensive than apartments off campus.

Honors Hall

I have lived in the honor's hall both years so far and overall they are very nice. They are more expensive than standard dorm rooms but they are well kept and have more than enough space.

Only If You Have to...

Most of the freshman dorms are dated, crowded (4 people to a small room), have frequent fire alarms and have been infested with cockroaches in the past. Not to mention they are expensive compared to the surrounding off campus area.

Nice

My freshman year on campus I lived in a dorm room with one other roommate and shared a bathroom with my entire floor. I loved the experience and met many of my friends now from there. Now I live in a single bedroom suite in another dorm room and love having my privacy. I soon will be moving into off campus housing and also love that. Everything has been clean, safe, and although dorm room living is a little more expensive people find it worth it.

Cleaning Service

Community bathrooms are cleaned daily, usually during the overnight hours. On weekends and holidays, they are re-stocked with soap, paper towels, and tissues, and any large messes are cleaned up. In-suite bathrooms are cleaned and re-stocked with tissue weekly on a predetermined day. Students are responsible for cleaning their own living/bedroom areas.

Did You Know?

At the beginning of each academic year, first-year students can compete in the Battle of the Halls event during Welcome Week. Each hall has a team of 12 students who compete in trivia contests, pizza-eating contests, balloon tosses, and other events to win prizes and become accustomed to life at UC. The event is co-sponsored by UC fraternities and sororities to help new and returning students become familiar with Greek Life.

Stratford Heights and University Park Apartments are only for UC students, but they are not managed by the University. Rent is not billed to a student’s University account.
