Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most students at the University of Cincinnati have their own computers. Some bring their laptops to class, while others have computers in their dorm rooms. Whatever you bring, it is probably best to bring your own, if you can. Despite the fact that the campus has quite a few large computer labs, they can get crowded, especially at the end of the quarter when final papers and projects are due. The computer labs also tend to be more crowded during the day as students are finishing up assignments and checking e-mail between classes. With your own computer, you can connect to the UC network and surf the Web from anywhere.

If you can’t bring your own computer, don’t worry. Just try to find a time when the labs aren’t crowded or find one that tends to have less student traffic. The library generally has open computers, and with a 24-hour lab, you’re more likely to find a computer there than in a smaller lab on campus. If you use the computers at school, or even if you have your own, it will be extremely helpful to purchase a portable flash drive. These are relatively cheap and are a very easy way to keep your papers, projects, and other files with you at all times. With a flash drive you can easily pull up files on any computer. Some professors actually require them, so it may be best to buy one early and learn how to use it.

Computers Are Necessary, but Provided.

The wireless internet is pretty good, I've never had any trouble connecting. There are plenty of computer labs throughout UC and several of them are open 24 hours. They sometimes can be crowded and busy, but typically it's easy to find a spot. Personal computers aren't necessary for class, however, they are convenient for doing homework and/or socializing.

Macs

The computers at our school are awesome, we have huge mac computers that are extremely nice and they are always accessible at computer labs and libraries. It's never crowded and always quiet in the libraries if you want to use them there. I've never had an instance where I couldn't find a computer to use on campus. We get 100 free prints per quarter which is nice and the wireless connection works all over campus.

Quotas

Tution is not cheap. The current paper quotas are very low. Students literally have to pay to print homework and projects for class.
