Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

It’s not hard to find a bar or club in Cincinnati because of the sheer number and variety the city has to offer. There always plenty to do, particularly for the over-21 crowd, especially with Mount Adams and Newport on the Levee just a few miles away. These spots are ideal for barhopping because there are so many different types of bars close together.

For students who aren’t into bars or aren’t old enough, there are other nightlife options. Cincinnati has a lot of art, culture, and sporting events that students can get involved with. Try going to a Cincinnati Reds game. The baseball stadium overlooks the river, and it’s beautiful at night. Even if you don’t like baseball, go to experience the beautiful lights of the city. You can also check out one of downtown Cincinnati’s restaurants—whether you’re looking for five-star eats or fast food, there’s something for everyone downtown. Visit an art exhibit at the Contemporary Art Center or go see an opera at the Aronoff Center. Students who are open minded and want to try new things will love Cincinnati. It’s a thriving city at night, and you don’t have to be into bars and clubs to have a good time.

Very Good

Woody's Bar on calhoun street is always crowded. Parties almost every weekend by greek life or just friends. Partiers range from about 17-23 years old. Transportation is amazing due to the UC shuttles for students.

Not a Big Fan

Nightlife is available for those +21, but I'm not a big fan of a lot of it. Nightclubs tend to be cliche - loud bass music and awkward dancing. There are some good bars around open for business though, with cheap drinks and nice, relaxed atmospheres.

Parties Over Clubs

The best clubs are downtown and aren't as easy to get to, and for guys are often 21+. Frats and house parties are more popular, cheaper, and tend to get crazier.

What is the party scene like on campus?

What’s the best way to get to the popular nightlife spots?

Facts

Club Crawler

Cincinnati only has a few major nightclubs, but don’t be discouraged: The clubs offer a variety of music that will keep you partying all night long. All clubs generally require a cover charge that can range from $5 up. Some also require—and strictly enforce—dress codes, so call ahead or ask around to determine what you can and can’t wear when you go out. The clubs are popular, especially on weekends when students can stay out later and don’t have class the next day.

Bar Prowler

Though there are only a few clubs in Cincinnati, there are plenty of bars to make up for it. With so many different types of bars in and around Cincinnati, it’s almost impossible to fail at finding an atmosphere that is right for you. Big or small, most bars have some sort of music playing and some even have small dance floors where you can let loose. Some bars require a cover, particularly ones that feature live bands and special events, but most are free to get in.

Organization Parties

Fraternities and sororities tend to have a lot of parties, but, as far as student organizations go, they are the only party-throwers of the bunch. Parties can get really crowded, especially during the warm weather when the activities spill outside into the yard and streets. It isn’t for everyone, but for those who are interested in it, it’s there.

Club ListingsWhat's This?

Bang Nightclub

Bang is a hot spot for 21-and-up students who are looking for a high-energy night out. Bang has five “rooms” where people can sit, dance, or drink the night away. The club has an upscale feel that is reminiscent of big-city clubs but is still quaint and simple. There is plenty of seating, some of which is elevated, so you can watch the crowd around you. There is no true dance floor but DJs spin the latest tunes to get the crowd pumped. Bang has a dress code, so leave the sneakers and hats at home.

The Mad Frog

The Mad Frog is a popular hangout for college students, particularly those who go to UC because it’s just a block from campus. Mad Frog has different theme nights, so there's something for everyone throughout the week. There are two different rooms at Mad Frog, giving you a choice of what music you want to dance to. And, there’s a bar in each room to alleviate the hassle of waiting in line to be served at the bar. It’s a good atmosphere to catch a live show, but get there early. It’s a relatively small place and can fill up fast, especially when the band is popular. Tuesday is a popular night to hit up Mad Frog, but this happenin’ spot is 21 and up only.

Metropolis Nightclub

If you’re 18 or older and looking for a place to dance, Metropolis may be the place for you. With three rooms covering top 40 hits, techno, and country, there’s something for everyone here. The club is generally busiest on Thursday nights, which is college night, because students get in at a discounted rate with their student ID. The club also holds wet T-shirt contests, pajama parties, and special events, but be advised that this club has a dress code and they enforce it. Be prepared for a bit of a drive too—this club is about 25 minutes away.

Mad Hatter

This is another small concert venue in the area. It is more for rock, metal, and alternative bands. Newport on the Levee

Although the Levee is a great place for 21-and-up students to bar hop, there is still plenty to do for underage students. The Levee is home to shops, restaurants, and a movie theater that caters to the under-21 crowd. Gameworks is also a popular spot for those who want to grab a bite to eat and play some video games. If you’re under 21, you can stay and play all the games you want until 10 p.m. After that, it’s reserved for the older crowd. Or, once you get worn out from venturing around the Levee, stop and take a look at the Cincinnati skyline from the Kentucky side of the river.
