Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you want to be in touch with the University community but don’t want to live in a dorm your entire college career, off-campus housing is right for you. The apartments around campus are what you would expect: a little rundown but sufficient for the price you pay. In most cases, the neighborhoods around UC are full of college students, so it can sometimes be hard to study if your housemates or neighbors are the partying type. Parties tend to get a little rowdy at the beginning and end of the school year and on certain holidays such as St. Patty’s, Halloween, and Cinco de Mayo. The best part about off-campus housing is there are so many options for places to live. It’s also a great opportunity to make friends, and you’re still close enough to UC to get involved on campus. It can be hard to meet people if you are only on campus for classes.

The downside to living off campus is security—or lack thereof. At night, the streets surrounding UC can be a scary area, and it’s best not to walk alone when you are more susceptible to being mugged or attacked, which is not all that uncommon here. However, if you utilize the shuttle and safety services provided by the University or walk with a buddy, it’s not so scary.

Sketchy Areas and Bad Distances

There are some really good places to live by campus, but they are ridiculously expensive. The only affordable ones are in shady areas or out of walking distance. If you plan on living off campus bring a car or get a house with 4+ people.

Good Range of Off-Campus Housing

There are some great, affordable options for off-campus housing...however, the safest, nicest, and most affordable aparments/houses are a bit of a drive from campus. There are some great options within a few blocks of campus, too, but obviously they're more expensive. UC even has the University Park Apartments, an apartment complex that's literally on campus, complete with parking--you can even pay rent through your university bill.

Apartment Hunting

Had no problem finding an apartment close to campus that was affordable. You need to find one early though because all the best places get rented quick.
