Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

While college dorm food, in general, is hardly appealing, you will most likely end your first semester feeling as if you couldn’t get enough of it. This is because CU provides its students with four different all-you-can-eat dining centers conveniently located in some of the most popular student dorms. In the past, CU’s dining halls were generally loathed by all, but recent renovations have impressed even the pickiest eaters. Among those changed, Farrand Dining Hall was transformed into the hip Alley@Farrand, offering a food-court atmosphere with a deli, pizza, paninis, salad bar, and much more.

Aside from the dorms, students on campus often venture to University Memorial Center (UMC), where they can grab a bite to eat at the food court that has everything from buffalo burgers and fries to a Mexican cantina. Surrounding the food court is Baby Doe’s convenience store, Subway, Wok & Roll Japanese take-out, Domino’s Pizza, Celestial Seasonings coffee and tea house, a smoothie cart, and a hot dog stand. There are a variety of meal plans available to students that can be customized according to each student’s needs. New freshmen are required to have either a 19- or 15-meal plan throughout their first two semesters in the dorms. Weekly menu postings can be found on the Web at http://housing.colorado.edu/dining.

Something for Everyone...

The on-campus dining at CU is really good for dorm food. The C4C is a brand-new facility and offers a wide variety options so you don't get too bored. Some of the cooked food can be a little oily and they sometimes over-chill the salad bar, but for the most part the food is pretty good. The farrand grab and go is, in my opinion, the best dining hall on campus. They offer pasta, salad, chips, hot sandwiches, and made-to-order burgers. Plus all the food in farrand is organic - which I think is a huge plus. I've never been to Willville's dining halls but I've heard the food isn't too great. Libby sucks at everything except breakfast.

One thing I must commend CU for is the school's effort to cater to students with food allergies and specific dietary needs. As a student with a very restrictive diet, the dining halls at CU always had something new and different to offer me that wasn't just salad. From organic and vegan food options, to gluten free bread, to straight-up french fries every day of the week, the CU dining halls have something for everyone.

C4C Provides Many Options

If you attend CU Boulder, the C4C is the place to eat. This massive dining hall offers a wide selection. CU is exceptionally accommodating of dietary restrictions. There are always vegan and vegetarian options that are quite delicious. Other dietary restrictions, such as gluten-free diets, are accommodated as well. There are many chefs' stations which allow you to customize your meal and make it just the way that you like it. The other dining halls still have a nice selection of food, but the C4C is the best place to go. Additionally, the C4C has a dessert station to help satisfy any sweet-tooth. The grab-and-go stations on campus are handy when you don't have time to eat in the dining hall. The grab-and-go stations are a good way to use your meal-swipes to get snack and stock up for the weekend. The only problem with the dining system is that it does not open until 10 on the weekend. This is problematic if you wake up early and are really hungry.

Quick and Easy Meal Options.

The UMC and C4C are going to be the big meal halls as they are home to a variety of restaurants. Subway, Dominos, Wok n Roll, to many different types of restaurants which offer any type of food you can ask for. From sushi to Italian it's hard to get bored with the many different options available here. Many places even offer grab 'n' go lunches for when you need to get to class on time, but still want something to snack on.

  • The popular South Park character "Chef" is loosely based on one of the actual cooks in Sewall Dining Hall. Check it out for yourself. The resemblance is uncanny.
