Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Whether it is for walking around with a cup of beer, making a double-lane turn, or simply looking suspicious, CU students soon learn that the Boulder police will get them one way or another. Campus police are extremely serious about drug use and drinking. Officers can be found wandering through the dorms with the intent to apprehend students engaging in illegal activities, so be prepared for random knocks on the door at all hours.

Once a student is written up by the Resident Assistant, or arrested by the officers, he or she must answer to Judicial Affairs. This is a committee that reviews students’ reported behavior. Small infractions, such as smoking marijuana or drinking in a dorm room, usually result in an informative alcohol class that costs about $100. In addition, the student must complete a given number of community service hours, according to the penalty committed. A policy was implemented called the “three-strikes” rule. According to the regulation, a student who is found to be in violation of the University’s drug and alcohol policies three times will be suspended for one full semester.

Hates the Party Reputation

There is definitely a huge strain between the university and the students at CU. The campus' administration obviously hates CU's party school reputation and does it's best to enforce strict social policies. Campus Police freely roam the halls of the dormitories at all hours of the night, and are granted access inside dorm rooms on any suspicion of illicit activities. Additionally, campus police have been known to hand out MIPs to students walking around campus as well as inside the dorms. They obvious cannot police the entire campus and all of it's students simply because CU is too huge, but they definitely do their best.

Maybe my perception is tainted after living in one of the party-centered dorms on main campus, but I find CU's policies to be very strict.

Don't Get Caught!

The University of Colorado at Boulder is known as a party school. That being said, drug and alcohol policies are in effect in On-Campus Housing. Residential Advisers, depending on how lenient they are, can report you to Judicial Affairs. The police force is required to report any drug or alcohol violation to the school. Offenders can be placed under academic probation and can even lose financial aid if caught with illegal drugs.

No Rules

You can pretty much do anything you want. You only get in trouble with the Boulder PD if you are really obviously intoxicated in public. In the dorms, you only need a key to enter a building- no checking yourself in, any guests in, anything. Parties in the dorms happen all the time. I've seen dogs in lecture halls and people routinely walk around barefoot...no rules.
