College Prowler Take

If you plan on spending four (or the average five) years in a haze, then this is the place. Whether smoking from a bong, blunt, or joint, Boulder has stores, suppliers, and fellow friends that are happy to comply. A fraction of this “stoner” scene can be attributed to those that wander aimlessly around campus smelling like reefer and sporting hemp gear. Yet, they can only be held accountable for a mere percentage. The reality is that the majority of people in Boulder smoke weed. Sorority girls buy sacks so they can share a laugh with their fraternity boyfriends. Snowboarders cough up enough money to buy enough to last them a weekend up in the mountains. Quiet creative writing majors and fumbling film students smoke together to get inspired.

Though marijuana is the preferred drug of choice, mushrooms, acid, and ecstasy are used occasionally and more often by the younger students who are still celebrating their newly acquired freedom. As students turn 21 and start entering the bar scene, there is a shift from hallucinogens to stimulants. Still, in its definition, this is merely a “scene,” comprising only a portion of the student body. Although there is prolific drug use, students report that it is purely experimental and that it rarely interferes with academics.

Drugs are easy to get around Boulder. You’ve got to watch out for cops on the Hill, but otherwise, it’s cool.

The drug scene in Boulder is...

The drug scene in Boulder is fairly prevalent if you want it to be. If there is something you want, you can always find it. My advice on the drug subject is: if you want to experiment, make sure that you can balance it with school, your friends, and yourself. And if you don’t want to, then there are plenty of students who will share your discretion.

Many rooms have alcohol. The main drug used by student who do use drugs is marijuana. Students do an okay job at hiding their drugs ad alcohol. If you don't want to use these substances, students are usually respectful and do not force you to try something. The policy is well enforced, but some people in charge say if they aren't bothering anyone and are keeping it on the low down, than they don't mind.

Like any town, drugs play a role among some groups of people and not others. While some students may never see hallucinogens or uppers, such as cocaine, most students will encounter pot and alcohol at some time. I’m pretty keen on the belief that a student’s experience is what she or he makes of it. If a student wants to do lots of drugs, they will most certainly find them. On the other hand, if a student chooses to indulge in academics, they can remain clear-headed with no problem whatsoever.

If you smoke the ganja, you’ll fit right in. There is a little bit of a coke scene, but if you’re not into drugs, it’s not a big deal.
