College Prowler Take

Many freshmen find that Greek life helps students adjust to the overwhelming college lifestyle by offering a number of social activities, as well as an overall sense of community. Within the first few weeks of school, freshmen have the opportunity to participate in the fraternity and sorority selection process known as “rush.” Over the course of roughly a week, potential Greeks meet with sorority and fraternity members to determine the best fit. Although a growing number of incoming students choose to participate, the majority of the school remains impartial to the Greek lifestyle, allowing for a wide variety of social scenes.

While Greeks do make up a large percentage of the bar scene, they do not shun fellow students. Their commitment to each other is apparent, yet Greeks in Boulder seem to be more laid-back in that they do not exclusively limit themselves to their “brothers” and “sisters.” Still, many males who rush report that hosting fraternity parties allowed for considerable interaction with the ladies by excluding non-fraternity members, and in turn, sorority members also cited Greek formals and socials as the perfect means for inviting a hot date. Therefore, there is a chance that you might feel like you’re missing out due to all the events hosted by Greek affiliates. So before you immediately eliminate the possibility of going Greek, be sure to carefully consider the pros and the cons that the Greek lifestyle could allow.

I personally don’t enjoy the Greek scene, but lots of people love participating in Greek life. I actually joined a sorority my freshman year, and lived in the house for the duration of my sophomore year. I will not deny that I made some lasting friendships, but I definitely prefer living on my own in a coed household. Luckily, the Greek system does not dominate the CU social scene. In addition, CU requires freshmen to live in the dorms, so people who go Greek are able to make friends outside their sorority or fraternity house.

Greek life is really big on campus, but it’s not the only way to meet people and make friends. The first couple of weeks of school, it seems like everyone is rushing and trying to join sororities. I won’t lie—it can be really competitive, and a lot of the sorority girls are stuck up. If you are into that, then definitely join, because they have a lot of parties, and you become close friends with the people. Still, any girl can go to frat parties and house parties, and you can meet tons of people that way.

Personally, I don’t like Greek life, and I only hang out with a few people that are involved in it. It used to dominate campus life, but the school is really cracking down on the Greek system.

Greek life can be a great way to meet people, but you might miss out on renting your own house with your friends since you have to live in the sorority or frat house for two years. This can be limiting in terms of meeting different people, especially those outside the Greek system.

There are lots of different scenes in CU, and Greek life is one of them, but I wouldn’t say it’s dominant.
