Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

UConn is a great place to spend your college years. There will be aspects of different universities that people like and dislike, so you won't have the perfect college experience at UConn—or anywhere, for that matter; however, you won't hate your time at UConn. There’s something for everyone here, with so many clubs and organizations on campus. If you pursue what interests you, you will have a great college experience. These clubs exist for a reason: to bring people together with common interests. If you don’t pursue them, you’re missing out on a chance to meet new people and have new experiences. Some students get overwhelmed with the large class sizes, limited parking, and the walks to class in unreliable New England weather. However, it's important to remember that college life is an adjustment.

The entire student body unifies over basketball. Whether you’re a fan of the sport or not, Husky pride is everywhere. Campus is like its own city since there’s really nothing else around Storrs, Conn. While its size may be intimidating, you learn quickly where everything is and which buildings your classes are in. Campus transportation makes it easy to navigate from one side to the other, as well. UConn’s academics are not to be ignored, with a stand-up reputation among New England public universities. A degree from UConn is sure to help you get the future you want.

Good School, Every Rose Has Its Thorn.

UConn is a great school but every school has its problems/concerns. It si hard to say them because I don't to exaggerate or downplay any of them. I think the biggest positive thing is that the University will not let you fail. You do have to reach out, but once you do, they are more than willing to help you get on/stay on track. The biggest negative thing is their lack of diversity. They really are trying to fix it, with large amounts of international students but the campus is still racially imbalanced. And I know many, if not most, college campuses are, but there's a running joke that if you see a tall black guy he must be a member of the basketball team. As a black gay female, I'd love to see the diversity on campus increase. There are support and community centers for all minority groups(GLBT, African American, Asian American, Puerto Rican and Latin American, Women, and Native American) as well as an International Center which gives you a place to talk to other people like yourself.

Good Enough

At UConn, there are lots of computer labs. I'd say there could definitely be more in the library, especially when mid-semester hits and tons of essays and group projects are being done. I've only ever not been able to get a computer once in my two semesters here so far and I only needed to print (which you can do for free if you bring your own paper in the Rainbow Center). Overall, I'd say if you absolutely can't get a laptop, don't freak out but it'd make your academic life a lot easier.

Bars, Bars, Bars

There are only bars around and those are 21 plus. Seeing as how those are right across from the police station they WILL card you. Frat and house parties are your best bet and there are no shortages of sober drivers Thursday - Saturday nights. Depending on the service it'll cost about $2-4 dollars for a ride there and back, but much safer and more comfortable than walking/driving drunk.
