Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Drugs and alcohol are present on campus, but UConn Police are strict with their law enforcement. Cops are present at party locations to make sure things don't get out of hand. They understand that college students are going to drink; they just want to see that no one gets hurt. The Alcohol and Other Drug Policy of the University of Connecticut has been established to support a safe and legal use of alcohol. Laws still exist at college—students face the same legal consequences as anyone else in Connecticut. There is really no tolerance for illegal drug use. Illegal drugs and contraband are prohibited on campus.

Although drugs and alcohol exist on campus, the drug scene is not prominent. Marijuana is the most prevalent drug used on campus by far, and it's relatively easy to acquire, even if you won’t see it if you aren’t looking for it. You will get carded at every package store and bar around campus, as well.

Alcohol Is the Thing

At the University of Connecticut partying and drinking is very popular, especially among the frats, sororities, and the uperclass students who live in off-campus housing. There are certain dorms that are known specifically for being party dorms, but students don't hear much about drugs. Drinking is especially popular during Spring Weekend, which recently had the campus turned into a police state.

It Really Depends Where You Live, but Where I Lived It Was Pretty Bad.

In most parts of campus, the drug/alcohol scene is pretty tame. I seem to hardly run across anyone in South campus who've had so much they've lost control, unless it's the first few weeks of the semester where the new kids don't know how much they can handle. The main draw is that freshman typically get housed in North, Northwest, and Towers, so in order to get to Carriage (a popular place for parties where girls get in free and guys go in based on capacity), you pass by North, which is known as the Jungle for a reason. Also, if you have your window open, prepare for obnoxiously loud students and the strong stench of weed.

Still, it's easily avoidable if you want to avoid it.

Drinking Is More Popular for Girls

At parties, girls are usually drinking. Boys do as well - but they are more into pot. It is very unusual if girls do drugs, but the boys are able to do many and experiment with many.
