Quick Stats

School Slang
  • Carriage and Celeron : The most popular off-campus apartments where parties are located
  • The Co-op: The University store right next to Gampel in the center of campus
  • Dairy Barn: Dairy Barn is UConn's homemade ice cream location. If you follow North Eagleville Road to its end when it meets Route 195, you’ll see signs for it around the agriculture buildings.
  • The DC: The Daily Campus, UConn’s school newspaper
  • FYE: First-Year Experience courses are customarily one-credit classes designed for first- or even second-year students looking to briefly delve in to topics they have interest in.
  • Gampel: Gampel Pavilion, the giant dome that hosts men’s and women’s basketball
  • Grab & Go: This refers to the dining service offered from lunchtime to late evening where you can purchase sandwiches and sides on the run to take to class and use your meal blocks to purchase them.
  • HuskyMail: UConn's email service
  • The Jungle: North Campus, and applicably named (fun, but a little bit rough around the edges)
  • MSB: The Math Science Building located across from the North Quad
  • PeopleSoft: UConn's online system used for registration, financial aid, etc.
  • The Rape Trail: Don't be afraid of the name, but always walk with a buddy at night because it gets dark. It is a trail in the woods that goes from campus to off-campus apartments. It is often used to get to parties, as opposed to walking on the street.
  • Sgt. Peps: Sgt. Pepperoni, a local pizzeria
  • SUBOG: Student Union Board of Governors; they plan on-campus activities from movie nights to concerts.
  • The U: The Student Union
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Buy books ahead of time online—you can find them much cheaper that way, but make sure they arrive in time for class.
  • Communicate with your roommate about what you’re each bringing.
  • Joining clubs and organizations on campus is the best way to meet new people and make friends.
  • Look at the residence halls online.
Tips to Succeed
  • Go to class. In giant lectures, it’s very easy to get lost, and the professors aren’t motivated to help you if you haven’t attended.
  • In the bigger classes, grading will be formulaic. Figure out what they want, and give it to them to the best of your ability.
  • Leaving your dorm room door open when you're hanging out will help you meet people.
  • Research your professors at either www.professorperformance.com or www.ratemyprofessor.com.
  • Take advantage of teachers' office hours if you need help. That's what they're there for.
  • Utilize the library.
  • Wear comfortable shoes.

Strong Community

Because the school is located in a country setting, students spend more time with each other, in clubs, getting involved in campus life and other extracurricular activities, rather than going out to clubs/bars or shopping, as you might in a school located near the city. It gives us a strong sense of community and commitment to one another.

Great School to Attend

Overall, UConn is a good school to attend. Most of the professors are very helpful and really know their stuff. Their enthusiasm really is contagious. Dorm life is great, and there's always something to do on the weekends. UConn was ranked in the top 20 for public research universities in the nation according to U.S. and News Report, so that's something to be proud of. Take advantage of the Cultural Centers at the Student Union, even if you aren't a part of that particular race or group. It's definitely worth it and you get to meet a lot of new people (everyone is friendly, trust me!). The free printing and quiet studying spaces in the Cultural Centers are top-notch and refreshing if you're used to studying in the library all the time. Join a couple clubs and find some new passions, or you can even indulge in a few that you already have. Starting a club on campus is pretty easy if you find enough people who want to start it with you :)

Facts

Traditions
  • Convocation: It’s a ceremony conducted at the beginning of freshman year and later at graduation in Gampel Pavilion. The ceremony is attended by upstanding faculty members to welcome students' arrival and hail their departure.
  • Greek Week: UConn’s fraternities and sororities engage in a week of athletic competition.
  • Lip Sync: Cultural centers, fraternities, and sororities put on performances according to the Homecoming theme each year.
  • Midnight Madness: A pep rally is held in Gampel Pavilion to kick off the first official practice of the men’s basketball team.
  • One Ton Sundae: When there are 2,000 pounds of free ice cream in the middle of a college campus, the students will come. You're given a bucket and a scoop—pick your favorite flavors and scoop away!
  • OOzeball: This refers to volleyball played in mud during the Senior Week festivities.
  • Rubbing Jonathan’s Nose: Rubbing the nose of the Husky mascot Jonathan, whose statue resides in front of Gampel Pavilion, is considered good luck for exams.
  • Spring Weekend: Thousands upon thousands of students from UConn and the surrounding schools come out each night of Spring Weekend for concerts and widespread inebriation. Each night of the weekend holds an official or unofficial campus event in either one of the giant parking lots on campus or at the off-campus apartments.
  • Winter Weekend: SUBOG sponsors a full weekend of entertaining events, which usually include a dance, a big-name concert, and other events.
Urban Legends
  • Eddy 501 in Alumni Quadrangle is haunted. Supposedly, there is a breeze when no window is open, tapping, and door rattling sounds.
  • It is rumored that an approximate 60 percent of UConn’s student body has the sexually transmitted disease HPV.
  • The students are almost positive this one’s true—supposedly, the special ingredient in all of the dining hall food is a laxative. This is done to keep students...regular. Or because the food is so bad it shouldn't be in your system for longer than a day.
  • There have been many real Jonathan dogs that represent the school’s mascot. Legend says that a few of the past ones are buried in a flower garden that welcomes students to the school.
