College Prowler Take

A wide array of clothing is required due to the range of temperatures that students will encounter year-round. In the early months of school, the daily temperatures will call for shorts and T-shirts for ultimate Frisbee games on the quads and walking to class. The nights in the un-air-conditioned frosh dorms will have you traipsing around at night in a pair of gym shorts and sleeping in your underwear. However, at the end of the first semester, as the temperature moves into the milder New England fall and early winter, you’ll definitely want some warmer clothes. The only redeeming factor of the clothing situation is the breaks. Thanksgiving break is situated so that you can most likely get by on a medium supply of warmer garments before you go home for the first time. If you’re like a good portion of the school and live relatively near the campus, it’s a good idea to coordinate family visits when you’ll need new clothes. If it’s not too long of a drive, have a parent come up for lunch with your winter clothes and go home with your summer clothes. If you live on the other side of the country, then it’s a good idea to be prepared for the worst in case it starts snowing before the break. The spring is a complete toss-up, and it’s not unheard of for it to snow in May. You’ll want to be prepared for some warmer weather by the end of the semester—just don’t send home that winter coat.

There is a winter wind phenomenon on campus, and according to popular rumor, the science department is currently researching it. As you’ll discover if you visit the campus, the buildings are quite high, which causes the campus to transform into a giant wind tunnel during the blustery New England winter. The arctic blasts run in both directions, so regardless of which way you’re walking, the wind will be in your face. If you have the pleasure of experiencing winter at UConn, expect to laugh, cry, laugh again, and cry some more before completely giving up on ever seeing warm weather again.
