College Prowler Take

The freshman classes for UD are getting smarter since the qualifications for acceptance are steadily becoming harder to meet. The result is UD’s increasing reputation for providing a strong education for its students. It is currently ranked on the second tier of large universities for its academic program. Besides the extensive requirements, like forcing students to learn a foreign language, students also have the benefit of some excellent professors. The professors here are all experienced in their field and often become quite close with their students.

Most students agree that their classes and professors fulfill their academic needs, especially in the more advanced courses. There is a tendency for introductory classes to be taught in large lecture halls, or to be taken over by TAs when there is a staffing shortage, and this is the major downfall of classes at UD. Staffing shortages have become alarming, causing some people to question the University’s budget priorities. Upper-level classes are much smaller and provide the comfortable atmosphere that allows students and professors to really get to know each other. Friendships often form that extend outside of the classroom. They don’t happen automatically, though. Try raising your hand in class every once in a while, because even if you aren’t certain you know the answer, you’ll have a better chance of getting to know your professor.

There are a lot of English teachers who are really bad because they are grad students, but most of the other teachers are pretty good. The teachers are very personable, but the sizes are huge for psychology and science courses. That’s one thing I hate about the University of Delaware.

The teachers here are hit and miss. If you know upperclassmen, it is a good idea to ask them who they like. A lot of professors are here because they are excellent scholars, but they are completely unable to teach a class without putting you to sleep. That is not to say that there aren’t some excellent professors, but you need to put some effort into finding the best ones to make your classes an enjoyable experience.

I was an Electrical Engineering major for the first year and a half, but I found that the engineering program was too intense. The workload was just too heavy.

The teachers are awesome and the classes are awesome if you want them to be. Students want to be entertained by stuff that does not interest them. They want 19th century English literature, or contemporary politics in France to be fun, when in reality these are not fun subjects. They are necessary subjects that create—for a few ambitious individuals—the education that most think should be delivered in some divine form instantly in their minds to remain forever. And they want it there with no effort. The reality is that it is all about effort. The professors are there, many from Harvard, Cornell, but the students here don’t try, don’t read, and don’t care. The result is that they don’t learn. It is all up to the individual.

I think the teachers here are awesome. I became so close to many of them that we actually began to care about what was going on in each other’s life. Many of the teachers will spend lots of time with students outside of the class. When I graduated, I missed my professors as much as my friends.
