Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Athletics are popular to those who care about them. If you have no interest in sports, you will not feel left out at all. The main spectator sports that draw crowds are football and basketball. Of course every student wants UD teams to win, but support is more abstract, as few students follow the games or know the details of UD sports teams. Intramurals are really big with those who participate in them, but seem practically nonexistent to those who don’t. Your own preference determines how important sports will be to your college life.

The gym for students is modern and fully-equipped. There are fitness classes, personal trainers, and staff to plan a personalized workout for those who cannot plan their own workouts. There are even options such as yoga for those who are not so fond of sweat-breaking exercise. Most students take advantage of some aspect of athletics, whether in team form or on their own, and the gym is always crowded at peak hours.

On the Rise...

Ud Athletics are definitely on the rise and really this year are prevalent again. Men's Soccer, Volleyball, and Women's Basketball all won Conference Titles and made it to the NCAA Tournament. Men's Lacrosse is usually nationally recognized but having an off year. With that said, Football sucks and are always overrated. Students typically will just tailgate and leave.

Athletics Is a Huge Hit at Delaware

From the crowded football stands, to the intense Women's Basketball games, the University of Delaware is a prominent school for NCAA Sports. Just this year, the Men's Soccer Team, Volleyball Team, and Women's Basketball Team all won the Colonial Athletic Association Conference and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Spring has just begun and many expect the Bluehens Baseball Team and Lacrosse Team to do very well.

School Spirit

I would say school spirit on this campus is about medium. The popular sports teams have a student following to support them, and most students have UD paraphernalia, such as sweatshirts and stickers for their cars. The most recent school spirited item is the appearance of skimpy ‘butt shorts’ with UD on the back, or various student organizations. I would say the Greek population demonstrates the highest level of school spirit as they tend to throw events celebrating student life and their time at UD. The day that the most school spirit is shown is no doubt Homecoming. Alumni return and tailgate before the game, and UD students celebrate all day. After this, there is very little that brings the students together in the same manner.

Getting Tickets

Tickets for UD students are completely free as long as you sit in the section reserved for students. If you want to sit with your parents in the regular stands, you must purchase a ticket. If a game is particularly important or exciting, it is better to get tickets a week in advance, because the seating for students is limited. You can get these in the Trabant Center Box Office. There usually isn’t a problem with games being sold out, so this is just a precaution.

Best Place to Take a Walk

White Clay Creek

Did You Know? The Blue and Gold colors that represent the UD were chosen in 1889 to reflect the colors in the Delaware state flag.
