College Prowler Take

The UD campus is mainly devoid of diversity in the undergraduate population. Those minority groups that do exist generally find each other and develop their own communities that drift in and out of interaction with the rest of the student population. They form their own clubs and organizations and assert their unique voice by coming together. Sometimes they even get through to the rest of the campus.

Some people complain that there are unfair housing tactics that relegate certain minority groups to the same area of campus housing, but the University has denied that this is so and claims that minority students generally ask to live together. UD does try hard to attract more minority students, but they find themselves with the problem that they cannot attract minority students to a campus that has so little diversity already present.

Diverse? You mean the three black people we have, and the 20 gazillion Indian and Chinese students? Different groups usually stick to themselves.

What diversity there is hasn’t...

What diversity there is hasn’t been integrated with the white majority. There is interaction between the groups—segregation hasn’t reemerged—but for the most part, diverse students stick together. South Campus tends to be overwhelmingly white with a few people to break the monotony. The type of person that attends this University is also quite uniform. It is usually a person who loves to drink and party, but also tries to do well in school with the minimum effort required to do this. Everyone who does not fit this description tends to complain about the degradation of human society, but most especially the lowering of the principles of academia. If this does not bother you at all, then you probably won’t notice because you will fit right in.

White, white, white. I guess that...

White, white, white. I guess that isn’t entirely true, since there are lots of international students going here. But, overall, you’d better get used to seeing white guys wearing backwards baseball caps and white girls wearing sorority T-shirts.

The campus is not terribly diverse with many upper-middle-class white folks, but there is definitely diversity.

The campus is too segregated. All the minorities live in Laird Campus, while the Beach/Perkins area is like a ghost town.

While there is a mix of all economic classes on this campus, the large majority of students are from upper-middle-class backgrounds. The number of students driving BMWs seems to be increasing every year!

Gay Pride

There is tolerance of the gay community on campus, although it is rare to hear from them. There is a campus club, called Haven, dedicated to preserving the rights of every sexual orientation.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Minority clubs are very active within their own community, but rarely have an effect on the general population. One of the most active organizations is the Black Student Union. Some others are Caribbean Student Alliance, Chinese Cultural Student Association, Delaware African Student Association, Cosmopolitan Club (Europeans), Deutsches Club, HOLA Hispanic Student Association, Haven, Indian Students Association, Japaru, Korean Undergraduate Club, and Persian Club.

Most Common Religions

The most popular religion is Christianity. There is a strong minority following that is quite active in Christian-based clubs.

Political Activity

Most students are not involved in politics and have a very vague idea of what is going on in the political world at any given time. There are rarely any protests against anything; most students aren’t bothered by anything unless it affects their social lives.
