College Prowler Take
Those who are in Greek organizations often love it and think it is the best part of the entire college experience. Those that don’t join often ignore the Greek presence and go about their own lives perfectly content without a Greek membership. This is one organization that tends to live in its own world. There are some Greek members who don’t even like to associate with those who are not Greek. Luckily, there are not many who subscribe to this philosophy, and Greeks tend to mix with everyone and separate for Greek events.
Recently there has been a strong effort to stop hazing, binge drinking, and all other harmful activities normally associated with being Greek. This has resulted in the suspension or removal of most of UD’s fraternities. Some are starting to return, but it has been pretty quiet without them around. The Greek community resents these actions, and longs for the days of wild abandon when binge drinking was just a given.

Greek life can be described mostly in terms of drinking. Most hazing has been outlawed, so the major test to join these organizations becomes drinking a lot. They tend to party more than others on campus and focus a lot of energy on their social lives. They have formals and hold events. |

Greek life is there, but it does not dominate by any means. You can usually tell the sort of person who is going to be Greek, and you usually don’t want to hang out with them anyway, so the people who should be together are together. |

UD is a big enough school that you should always be able to find something to do, whether it’s a party (Greek or non-Greek), movie, a trip downtown, or whatever. It does help if you have a car or friends with cars, which make quick trips to Philly viable. |

It does feel like Greeks run the place sometimes with all the frat guys/sorority girls you see running around everywhere, but I’d have to say that it doesn’t really dominate things, since I’ve made it through three years without ever going to a frat party. |

Greek life is amazing. It’s so much fun. The University is trying to get rid of us, and this is bringing a sense of unity with all of the Greeks. It doesn’t dominate social life, but it keeps it alive.’ |

Did You Know?
All Greek chapters at UD are subject to the five-star system based on academics, financial management university/community relations and service, campus involvement, membership intake/pledge program. You must have four stars to hold any social events.
The UD is cracking down on hazing and binge drinking in the Greek community with strict penalties and suspensions.
The Greek scene has been quiet for a few years due to probations, but many fraternities are welcomed back to the UD, so it will be interesting to see what happens.
