Inside Scoop

Quick Stats

School Slang
  • The Beach: Sandy or grassy area (depending on the University’s current diligence in making the grass grow) located on East Campus.
  • The Bob: Refers to the Bob Carpenter Convocation Center.
  • Harry Mart: The mini-mart in Harrington Commons.
  • The Hot Dog Lady: Only street vendor on Main St. who often joins local student gatherings, and sometimes drinks with the students.
  • Kegs and Eggs: Waking up by nine and drinking with breakfast. This is common on Homecoming.
  • Little Bob: Refers to the Bob Carpenter Center that contains the student fitness center. This is opposed to the Bob Carpenter Convocation Center (which is much bigger).
  • The Mall: The grassy area running between the buildings on North and South Central Campus. It has recently been renamed “The Green,” but don’t let anyone hear you calling it this. Most vehemently refuse to abandon the familiar name.
  • Mug Night: Thursday night binge drinking at the Stone Balloon.
  • Rodjects: The Rodney dorms are often referred to by this name to illustrate the small cramped quarters, and the often unclean surroundings that are often associated with U.S. housing projects.
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Cool is only subjective; do what you want to do and not what everyone does.
  • Fraternity parties are not all they are rumored to be.
  • Limit your meal plan and maximize your points.
  • Marijuana is very popular; almost everyone smokes it or has in the past.
  • Talk your parents into an allowance if at all possible.
  • There is not a big art or music scene.
  • This is not the party school it once was. There has been a major crackdown on underage drinking, which limits the weekend entertainment.
Tips to Succeed
  • Be aware of your alcohol tolerance before you get here.
  • Buy shoes you can walk in.
  • Buy your books and read them.
  • Don’t get behind on the syllabus.
  • Get to know your professors.
  • Go to class—I found this out the hard way!
  • Ignore the pre-formed class pathways and take whatever you want the first year.
  • Wear a coat in winter, even if it clashes with your partying outfit!

Small State Probz

Regardless of the 16,000+ student count, Delaware is super small, and it seems even tinier if you're in-state. It's hard to avoid people you know, even if you're only stepping out to the Harry Mart at midnight. Sometimes that's a good thing though, everyone knows friends of friends and connections are everywhere.

Main Street Brings Flair to Campus

One of the many great things about the University of Delaware, Main St. runs straight through the campus. On Main Street, students are exposed to great restaurants, shops, and many other great things.

Unknown Experience Opportunities

They get a B- for bad advertising. I am currently a Senior and just found out that you can have an RA internship here if you're interested in becoming an RA. I am currently a Curatorial Apprentice with the University Museum, which I only discovered because I was looking at the Museum's website. Most people don't know we have University Museums, let alone you can be an Apprentice and not have to get a museum internship off campus!

Facts

Traditions
  • Fashion Show: Every year, the apparel design students put on a fashion show to demonstrate what they’ve learned over the years.
  • Fightin’ Blue Hens: The school’s mascot is taken from a military battalion’s pastime of watching Blue Hens fight each other in 1775. As the hens demonstrated great ferocity and success in battle, this battalion earned the nickname, “Blue Hen’s Chickens.” The bird was adopted as the state bird in 1939, and it lent its status to the UD sports teams.
  • Greek Week: This is a festival involving all of the fraternities and sororities on campus. They participate in powder-puff football games, talent contests, produce a one-day game area on the Beach, and demonstrate their Greek pride in other ways over the week.
  • Homecoming: Homecoming is a big deal at the UD and is generally celebrated with an all day drinking binge starting with “kegs and eggs.”
  • Kissing Arches: These arches divided the men’s and women’s campus before dorms were coed. When the girls had to go home for curfew, couples would linger under the arches kissing good night.
Urban Legends UD is one of Playboy’s top 10 party schools. Think again!
