College Prowler Take

The city of Newark basically consists of one street aptly named Main Street. This street is full of restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and stores. Over the years, Main Street has become more commercial with the appearance of a Starbucks, and numerous tanning salons. While many people complain that this hurts local businesses, other students appreciate the availability of these familiar shops. Most students find plenty of stores to satisfy their appetites and shopping addictions (no tax—yipee!) but not much actual entertainment. The art and music scenes are in the first stages of development, which makes Newark somewhat lacking in that respect.

Newark itself only provides entertainment through its extensive bar community, but it is within driving distance of many major cities. Philadelphia is the closest one and offers night clubs of all sorts, local bands, theater, and museums. In addition, the drive to New York or Washington, DC is manageable for day or overnight trips. Some students appreciate this small-town feel and enjoy the scenic campus while others will drive to Philly every weekend. Most students will spend some time exploring the surrounding cities by the time they graduate. It’s all a matter of preference really—what’s yours?

There is not too much to visit around here. Philly is very close by and so is Baltimore. Once I turned 21, I would go up to Philly to see bands and go to the bars, but not around here.

There are no other universities in the town—you get to be on top here. This is a small town with not too much going on. Go to the Deer Park when you’re 21. And visit Philly and Baltimore; they are both close and worth the trip.

Newark is called the ‘city’ of...

Newark is called the ‘city’ of Newark, but only because the student population increases the number of people to a level high enough for city status. There is really only one major street to the town and that is Main Street. During the school year, this is mostly overwhelmed by University students and professors. There are multiple coffee shops, clothes stores, textbook stores, beauty salons, and a variety of other small businesses.

There are a couple of very small schools around the University of Delaware. Like I said, we do live in a town, so there are lots of residential areas. We are right near Wilmington, about 30 minutes from Philadelphia, about an hour and a half from the beach and some outlet malls, and an hour from Baltimore. This shows that if you want to venture outside of Delaware, there are things to do.

Most incoming students see Newark as a quaint little town that is within driving distance of many major cities. They find it cute in its simplicity, but this often gets boring very quickly.

Local Slang
As Newark is mostly made of up college students, slang varies from person to person. The town itself is so overwhelmed with the influx of students that it does not have any defining slang to claim as its own. I’ve had many people rack their brains to come up with something original that we say, but the consensus is that Newark is a pretty unoriginal town filled with original students. The mix of students from many different states, along with a wide array of international students, guarantees that everyday language sticks to the most common slang, so everyone can communicate with one another. You should be just fine if you limit yourself to the most general slang words in your vocabulary (“what’s up,” “chill,” and “sweet”).
