Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The city of Newark basically consists of one street aptly named Main Street. This street is full of restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and stores. Over the years, Main Street has become more commercial with the appearance of a Starbucks, and numerous tanning salons. While many people complain that this hurts local businesses, other students appreciate the availability of these familiar shops. Most students find plenty of stores to satisfy their appetites and shopping addictions (no tax—yipee!) but not much actual entertainment. The art and music scenes are in the first stages of development, which makes Newark somewhat lacking in that respect.

Newark itself only provides entertainment through its extensive bar community, but it is within driving distance of many major cities. Philadelphia is the closest one and offers night clubs of all sorts, local bands, theater, and museums. In addition, the drive to New York or Washington, DC is manageable for day or overnight trips. Some students appreciate this small-town feel and enjoy the scenic campus while others will drive to Philly every weekend. Most students will spend some time exploring the surrounding cities by the time they graduate. It’s all a matter of preference really—what’s yours?

Main Street

On Main Street students can feel free and comfortable to find any type of store they like and a myriad of different cultural foods. You can feel safe traveling at night whether you are using the buddy system or not. Nearby residents that are not college students embrace the positive atmosphere and have great times with local students.

College Town Atmosphere

The University of Delaware gives off a warm atmosphere and is, in a sense, its own community. Main Street runs through campus and includes boutiques for shopping, restaurants, coffe shops, bookstores, a church, and convenience and food stores. Being so close to campus, Main Street is generally a place where students go to hangout and grab a bite to eat. Personally, I engoy going to the coffee shops to study for exams. Also, there is a mall only 10 minutes from campus; buses provide easy transportation for students.

Nice town close to big cities

Newark has everything you need in a college town. However, after a while many students crave a change of pace so the close cities of Baltimore and Philly provide a nice break

Local Slang
As Newark is mostly made of up college students, slang varies from person to person. The town itself is so overwhelmed with the influx of students that it does not have any defining slang to claim as its own. I’ve had many people rack their brains to come up with something original that we say, but the consensus is that Newark is a pretty unoriginal town filled with original students. The mix of students from many different states, along with a wide array of international students, guarantees that everyday language sticks to the most common slang, so everyone can communicate with one another. You should be just fine if you limit yourself to the most general slang words in your vocabulary (“what’s up,” “chill,” and “sweet”).
