College Prowler Take

Nightlife is mostly synonymous with drinking on this campus. The most popular thing for students to do is drink in their dorms, at parties, or at the bar. Main Street is packed with students on weekend nights fighting to get in as many drinks as possible. For those who don’t drink, there is not much else to do but get out of town.

UD often tries to create alcohol-free events for its students such as movies, comedians, concerts, and alcohol-free dances. But the popularity of the partying scene creates a stigma for these events that prevents most students from attending. As UD continues to crack down on the drinking scene, these events may gain in number and popularity, but so far there haven’t been big gains in attendance making University officials wary of spending money on things students won’t enjoy.

The bars are pretty good around campus. My favorite is the Deer Park. There are some locals, but it does not get too crowded (at least not to the point where you can’t move) and they have good, cheap beer and food. I like to play Quizzo on Tuesday nights, and they have good food specials. For just going out and having a good time, there is the Stone Balloon. There are some good bands that play there (and some poor cover bands), but the students really enjoy themselves there, and the crappy beer is very cheap (most of the time). I don’t like Kate’s for bar-going; it is overcrowded, and there is a lack of lighting by the stairs and only one set in case of fire.

The bars on Main Street are very strict with IDs, so the bar becomes more exclusive. The bars are very popular with students. Each night typically has an appointed bar that ‘everyone’ goes to. This makes the bar experience a crowded one. The most popular bars are the Stone Balloon, Kate’s, and the Deer Park. Each bar attracts a permanent clientele that refuse to cater to bar schedules and represents a division in type of person.

I’m pretty fond of the East End, which has lots of cool bands playing fairly regularly and good nachos (there’s a weekly nacho night with some kind of ridiculously cheap special on those). It’s kind of a hangout for the more underground/hipster types. The bars of choice for most students seems to be the Deer Park or the Stone Balloon. Of those, I’ve only been to the Stone Balloon once to see some bands play. It certainly wasn’t a typical night there since they don’t generally let in students under 21. From what I saw, it seemed like a cool place.

The bars on Main Street are really strict about minors, and they often have cops working the door, double-checking IDs or using scanners that can determine if it’s a fake. As for clubs, there is the Big Kahuna in Wilmington that has college night one Wednesday every month, where buses provide transportation to and from the bar. It can be fun. If you have a car, Philly has awesome nightclubs that aren’t that far away. I think there’s a Web site to see what Philly has to offer on any given night: www.phillynitelife.com.

The parties on campus are like any other college party. They are crowded, and there are tons of idiots who will pay $3 for a cup, ostensibly to drink all night, when in fact they will fill it up once or twice and go home angry.

Facts

Bar Prowler

Most of the most popular bars are right along Main Street in Newark. This makes it easy to walk to and from the bars. Unfortunately, Newark has recently banned drink specials in an effort to curb binge drinking among college students. Whatever!

Organization Parties

Often different sports teams will have parties at a designated team house that is populated only with members of the team. Depending on the group, the parties can be very open or very exclusive. Different clubs also organize parties, get-togethers, and other social activities. The Tae Quon Do club often has barbecues, while HOLA sponsors parties in local Mexican restaurants.

Grotto’s is much smaller than the other bars on Main Street and offers a more of a relaxed good time. It is in a small space and the attire is casual. The restaurant is open until 1:00 a.m. and features pool tables and other fun games in the back room. There’s cheap food to go with you drinks.

Iron Hill is a little more upscale and tends to be the choice of older students. The drinks and food are a bit more expensive, but also a lot tastier than its cheaper counter parts. The unique thing about this bar is that they brew their own beers, such as Pig Iron Porter and Raspberry Wheat. While it is classier, it still has its fair share of drunken rowdiness on weekends!

Kate’s is considered one of the coolest places for students to go. Most students dress up in their cutest outfits, girls in their tightest clothes, and prepare for a night of drinking and dancing. This bar has its own dance floor upstairs and features an ‘80s night every Saturday. It is usually very crowded on weekend nights, but is generally a good time. Monday nights feature a weekly Quizzo game where groups of friends form teams and answer trivia questions.

La Tolteca is the place for margaritas. Students flock here for these beverages, offered on ice or frozen, for a night of Mexican partying. This restaurant is often the site for HOLA parties where you can learn Spanish dances and drink as many margaritas as you like. Be careful—they mix them strong!

The Stone Balloon is an extremely popular bar for UD students. It is very crowded and sticky with spilled beer, but students don’t mind. They fight the crowd just to get a beer. Thursday, “Mug Night,” is the most popular night. Buy a Stone Balloon Mug and hold onto it; this cup entitles you to as many $2 Natural Ice beers on Thursdays as you can possibly drink. In a town that has banned drink specials, this is what keeps the students pouring in. Another main feature of the Stone Balloon is its music scene. It generally has a local band playing each weekend, and occasionally hosts such big names as Third Eye Blind.

This bar is the hang out for every unique and out-there person in town. You will see many piercings and crazy haircuts, but you don’t have to be punked-out to go there. The atmosphere is very casual and relaxed and features some of the only good local music in town. Even if being different isn’t your thing, check this bar out at least once.

Timothy’s is one of the few bars not on Main Street that manages to draw a large crowd. It is less crowded than the Main Street bars, but offers all the same tasty drinks. It is an ideal place to go if you prefer to actually sit down and have a conversation with your friends. The food offered is also unique because you can order buffalo meat burgers. It’s a pioneering menu item and one that has actually been judged a tasty meal by students.

What to Do if You're Not 21

This coffee shop is the most popular one for students. It offers a variety of coffee drinks and tasty sandwiches. Brew HaHa provides a nice alternative location for studying when you can stand the silence of the library no longer and really need a caffeine-fix to wake you up. They have a large outside deck where students can read or converse when it is nice out.
